To cut an incredibly long story short, according to the buyer “I have taken the buttons off a cardigan and sown them back on” even though I haven’t.
However the buyer has opened a return case in which I have accepted. They would have to return it back to me to get a refund. (Which is basically what they asked for.
Now theyre telling me they arnt going going to return it and “give it to charity”. Baring in mind they have opened a case to return.
What happenes if they state that they have returned it even though they haven’t even sent it?
Im more worried that they will give bad feedback, even though I’m doing exactly what they asked.

The buyer can state whatever they want. But if they don’t provide tracking showing delivery of the item to your zip code, neither eBay or PayPal will refund them. Watching the tracking, the buyer has 5 business days to send the item back to you; if there is acceptance scan by the end of the 5th business day you can call and have the return closed or you can let it time out after 30 days.

If they don't return, they own it, & don't receive a refund.
If your buyer leaves you bad feedback, you can reply that you offered buyer a full refund

In my recent experience, the weekend will be included in the buyer's five-day timeline if the fifth day falls on a Friday (makes no sense to me if it's not in by midnight of the fifth business day, but that's what CS said). When five days passed and I didn't get the return or proof of tracking, I phoned eBay to get it closed on Sunday. CS said it would be closed in my favor on Monday, but later that night on Sunday I received notification that the case was escalated (by me) and the return was closed in the buyer's favor (he was returning, claiming non-fit) and the reason was changed from non-fit to not as described. That certainly wasn't my intention; I just wanted to get the case closed and my funds associated with the transaction released since five days had passed with no action on the buyer's part). I got it straightened out by speaking with a supervisor on Monday, and I would suggest if you phone eBay to be sure to call on a weekday. I also was concerned about the buyer leaving a negative because he has a history of leaving negatives for sellers who wouldn't honor his return requests, despite their no-return policy. The eBay supervisor said his feedback would be removed.
Good luck to you!

You should be ok if you put return for refund in the case and sent them a return label. They will have 7t 7 days. If there's no tracking showing you got it back, they get no refund. Make sure to add her messages to the case too.
Be careful calling cs. I've seen a lot of posts lately that as soon as a seller called customer service, no matter what the person said, cs closed the case in the buyers favor. No idea what's going on there. If you do call make them stay onthe line until it's closed in your favor.

Yeah, It's better to let the case for refund time out at 30 days (after you have approved the return of course)- no refund will be refunded then automatically and the customer forgets since it has been too long - like the others - THE MINUTE you call CS - the Buyer has their refund and many times they send nothing back - Thanks to the new and Improved Ebay policy on freebies....(sarc*)
