I sold a small item a week ago, printed postage, and dropped it off at the counter of my local post office. Since then the tracking has not updated from "Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item". The expected delivery date shown to the buyer is tomorrow. I went to the post office and asked about it and they said that since it shows as not having been dropped off I can't file a claim for it being missing. Should I reach out to the buyer about the situation? How to go about it if yes? Since there has been literally no activity on the tracking since purchasing can I cancel the label? General thoughts on what to do here?

I usually go to 1 of 2 post offices 6 days a week. Every package gets a weigh in and a scan. This gives me my acceptance scan on every package, and the weight in gives me proof of weight on the receipt in case there is a APV issue.

You won't think this way after a few INR's for the lack of a 'reciept'. Added 6% in fees as well as jeopardizing your selling account for a few of these.......

I have had this happen a few times over the years. It is probably on its way and may pop up in the scanning system when it is delivered and is scanned for the final time. Possible there is some issue with the label and it isn't being scanned properly. Or just bad luck. I'd wait to see if it arrives shortly or in a day or two before contacting the buyer.
If it is possible where you are, you might want to schedule a free USPS pickup and have them pick up your packages. Saves lots of time and gas. You can have the same scanning issues with a pickup too, of course, but it is a major time saver versus going to the post office. (If you are sending a valuable item, it is still worth going to the post office and getting a receipt just in case.)

Shipped 3 Ground advantage packs same day a couple weeks ago. 2 scanned that day, third not scanned said waiting for drop off or words to that effect. Customer checked it and was PO'ed of course. That one went across the country without a scan till it reached CA, couple more days it showed up. So much for consistency.
