Massive fault in Ebays return policy and little to no respect for sellers.

I have a listing for a particular perfume. In the title and content there is the "manufacturers name" then the "scent name". So it's titled "manufacturer name / scent name"... easy enough right? I mean you'd have to be a moron not to see it and I am very very very clear in my listings about my products, I take zero short cuts so the buyer knows exactly what they're buying. I just closed my store in 2020, trying to retire while selling off my inventory and due to their nature I don't want products going back and forth. Furthermore, I've been in my industry for over 32 years, this is not my first rodeo and I've owned a brick & mortar (24 yrs) and an online store 17 yrs.). So yes, I know what I'm doing, more than most, and I'm no dumb bunny by any means. Now stay with me here.

A buyer typed in the search results the "manufacturers name" and a "particular scent". I'm guessing my listing came up due to the manufacturers name. Lets make something very clear, I do NOT have a listing for the "particular scent" she wanted but I do have a different scent from the same manufacturer and it's very rare. SO, she ordered my product on new years eve, I shipped it out on new years eve and a week later she pulled a return with "wrong item sent". She even put in the Case Return in black and white that, "she typed in said "particular scent" but received the "wrong item".

I sent her an extensive email telling her what happened (how search results work, how I don't even have a listing for the scent she wanted, how ebay has all the data and can see that she ordered what I had listed, yadda yadda) and due to the nature of this perfume (you can literally screw off the top and get right into the liquid, it's not vacuumed sealed like a lot of perfumes are) I explained to her that I could not accept a return for it due to the nature of the product.

EBAY, stepped in and stated to me that due to the fact that she put "wrong item sent" that I have to accept the return and I have to eat ALL shipping cost. I spent an hour on the phone with them trying to make sense of this garbage policy stating that things are not black and white and that this issue proves that to the nines. No matter the truth of the situation, I am being forced to accept the return. I'm sorry, I've been a store owner for over 24 years and this is wrong. The situation was not my error in any way, fashion, or form. The customer did not read the listing and I'm the one taking it in the bum. The customer is "using the system" and Ebay is backing her up when the proof of who is at fault here, is in black and white, there is NO gray area.

Now, tell me what's wrong with this  picture? My respect level has diminished because there is no respect for the seller and the fact is, without the seller, Ebay would not exist.

Yep, eBay will always back the buyer is this type of case, no matter how dumb they are.

I don't think that you are wrong in how you crafted your listing.  However, we all know that some buyers might not read as closely as they should.  AND, we all know that eBay sides with buyers.  Returns are a fact of life - no amount of insulting the intelligence of the buyer will change it.  I find it disappointing that we can't have disagreements without resorting to insults.  It doesn't reinforce your argument - it just looks bad, and calls into question your customer service in this case.

You are 100% correct in what you did, but as you see eBay policy is flawed.

See it here all the time.

Experience it myself.

Sometimes zero of what the buyer wants shows up in the search, so eBay shows other things. Buyer is so thrilled to have found the item, and jump right on it, and make the purchase.

eBay will tell you it is "the cost of doing business".

Had this from a buyer before I went into "away time" due to the shipping slowdown.  Took weeks for the item to get back.  My label, so I had to refund the buyer even before it got back.
