I have a pkg that was mailed on the 6th going to FL. This *may* have been one of those weirdos where the number got re-used, I'm not positive. Yesterday I noticed that a bunch of my pkgs from the 6th had not been delivered. Luckily they all got delivered today except for this odd one that went to my sort center an hour away on the 6th & has basically been coming in & out (supposedly) of my sort center over 10 days.
So last night I started a Missing Mail Search & let the buyer know. I realize it's not missing, but some type of intervention is necessary. The tracking says Missing Mail Search Request Initiated - Atlanta Georgia. Now eBay says the last location is ATL. So my question is, is eBay confused b/c the Missing Mail search is in ATL or is my pkg really maybe in ATL, so close to my buyer? TIA, going to bed but will check back later.
Note, not sure why these got numbered, top is most recent tracking.

Denver scans 7/14 onward prob aren't your package - just container scans. Happens sometimes. Package is prob on its way to your buyer and stuck in Atlanta, notorious for delays since USPS's numerous failures in launching a new sort facility there. Nearly a year and a half since that sort facility opened and it's still a mess and well below the national averages for mail processing times.

Tracking many times is not individually scanned; but the entire truck is scanned and everything in it shows whatever. The USPS in person can 'see' those type scans, we cannot.

I've had serious issues with the sort facility in Atlanta. Numerous packages this year alone. Purchased a map in December and it arrived in March. Sat in Atlanta facility for 2.5 months. One of the consumer affairs people told me they were being brought mail before the plant even opened so they are constantly back logged.

Interesting thank you all. I'm not convinced the pkg is in ATL, but maybe next time I'm at the PO, I'll see if they can see any more scans than me. I feel so bad for this poor woman. The good news is she hasn't even contacted me.
ETA: Oops, should have checked the tracking at USPS when I got up. eBay is not showing it, but the MM search seems to have shook it loose, as it's suddenly in NC, which at least is close to FL & not in ATL, which you all scared me of 😄 Hopefully it'll get there tmw.

In my experience the location shown for Missing Mail Search Request Opened is not the location of the package.
It is the location of the postal employee handling the case. It is usually in the closest distribution center to the buyer based on the info you have entered when you opened the case.
It is not of any use and you need to wait for an response and the case being closed.
