Label Flow Size issue from March 16, 2022 Weekly Chat - unresolved

velvet@ebay

Hi Velvet,

It is now one month after I posted on the March 16th Weekly Chat about the Label Size function not working and this issue remains unresolved (and I have not been advised of any updates from anyone at eBay on this issue). That was the FireFox version I posted about and the first pic below is the one I used on the Weekly Chat.  As a courtesy to eBay I started to test some things on another browser, Edge in this case.  I do not use Chrome as mentioned on some other issue threads.  Below the first pic I delve into  what I found on Edge.

Screenshot (3353).png

Regarding Edge I had mixed results ... while the sizing % function works on that browser it winds up being multiple extra steps PER label because the setting I select for size % is not retained.  Below is a collage of pics I put together to illustrate ALL the extra steps required to get the functionality.   First the functions are flipped to the opposite side of the label display, not an issue just and observation.  Next, numbered points mean using the slider bar, display expansion links, more slider bar, deleting the default 97% (yep, on there EVERY time I do this), type in new value, etc.

Screenshot (3446).png

Before any of the newer label flows were launched I could use the browser File menu Print set up functions that would RETAIN my default size preference so it was very streamlined to print the desired size EVERY time without any extra work.  When I needed to change the size to smaller then my normal size I could do that then reset the default.  Now the File menu only has Print, nothing else for eBay labels.

The newer label flow versions have been no improvement in this regard.  If there are specific browser settings required to get the functionality of the eBay label flow then eBay needs to provide those for FireFox, Edge and Chrome.

In closing, the eBay label flow does not work correctly on either FireFox or Edge and it would be nice to see some urgency on eBay's IT Programming Department part in fixing these issues or providing browser settings so their programmed functionality actually works.

Sincerely,

Mr. L

Hey @mr_lincoln. Some things to try:

Edge appears to have a problem with printer settings you described (link), so I wouldn't count on using Edge without some more research to see if anybody found a fix for it.

Have you tried downloading labels instead of printing from the web? Have you tried printing labels from Adobe instead of from a browser?

Tagging in @rfmtm and @eburtonlab as they may have more suggestions on this topic.

Yes, since browsers like Firefox removed the Page Setup from under the file menu, things do work different.  However, you should be able to get similar results.

I'll do some testing here, but to make sure I am on the same track:

You want to print at the same scaled value every time you print?

You want to print the half sheet label to a laser/inkjet printer?

You are using the latest Firefox?

Is Firefox set to open PDF files with Adobe and not its built in reader?

I haven't had an update @mr_lincoln. I've reached back out to see if they've made any progress and hopefully @wastingtime101 and @rfmtm provided some helpful info as well.

@mr_lincoln

First off you are opening the label in the browser, this of course uses that particular browser's built in reader and not Adobe, so results will vary from one browser to another.   Still this is probably the only way to set the scale and have it stick, as the basic Adobe reader does not have this option.

I tried reprinting some shipping labels of different formats with the latest Firefox version using its built in reader with a target printer page size set to 8.5"x11".  I set a reduced scale on the first one opened.  That scale stuck, and while all opened full size, the scale was applied each time in the print preview and printed scaled as well.

I did not have a label/receipt label available as you posted to test, but no reason to believe it should not work the same using the latest Firefox.  If I get a chance to create one, I will test again, or if you have a problem one you saved to a file, you could send it to me to test.

Note, that while the built in readers usually work fine for that half sheet label formats, they often cause a problem for a thermal label printer format.  And while other external readers can work, Adobe is always the best choice to avoid problems.

Thank you @rfmtm  ... I DO plan to do some more research, reset BOTH browsers and Reprint some labels ... regardless of new first time label prints or printing from the Shipping Labels page it does not make a difference.

In Edge the label DOES shrink on the display when the smaller % is typed it ... in FireFox (latest version) it does not and still prints 100% regardless of the setting in the shrink field ..

And just an FYI ... all I do is click the Print label in the eBay Label flow ... how it opens is nothing I have changed.

When they opened in Adobe (again without me doing anything special, its just how it opened when I click Print label) the shrink % worked BUT I had to change it each and every time ...

Maybe only a problem with the half sheet label or because the receipt is enabled.  May be worth trying just the label without the receipt to see if that is related to the problem.

In Firefox open the Settings under the Tools tab.  Go down and check the Applications list.  There are two PDF settings, the second one (application/PDF), is the one that opens the ebay label.  What is that set too?

@rfmtm  That has been done on numerous occasions via the Combined shipping function via the "Print labels in bulk" on the label flow.   There is no receipt portion in the Combined label flow, you have to print a separate page if you want a hard copy record.  Same result ... no joy on printing smaller in FireFox

Guess I am going to have to try it here on a half sheet label, but will have to wait for something to ship.

There are control attributes that ebay can put in a PDF document, but it is odd they would do something different for this particular format.

Other half sheet labels like an international label still scales, as does the half sheet label for the ebay's Standard envelope.  So why the regular USPS one now doesn't is a mystery.

@mr_lincoln   I just tested this further using the ebay output for the half sheet label with receipt for an 8.5"x11" sheet using Firefox 99.0.1 (64bit), with it set to open the label in Firefox.  This looks exactly like your example.

The scaling worked perfectly and stuck for all labels that followed.  So either ebay fixed this, you're not using the latest Firefox, or you have some other setting that is a problem.

My sincere thanks @rfmtm , you are way ahead of me for testing this ... keep in mind this has been an issue for quite a while and I have gone through numerous Updates including all FireFox updates.   The eBay flow on my laptop DOES retain whatever size % I type in ... it just doesn't function on the actual half label page like it previously did.

Additionally, when using Edge the eBay label flow does NOT retain my preferred Size % BUT, the reduction in size DOES work both on the screen when it updates to the new size % AND when it prints.  The Edge eBay label flow requires numerous extra steps to change the size % ... if THAT browser would retain my settings then I could report it works.  But it doesn't.

It is quite possible that the issue is on my end ... when I started testing on the 2nd browser (as suggested by eBay) I was hopeful that it would work flawlessly ... errrrnt!  When it was suggested to try yet another browser by eBay .... well, how many does one need right?  Which one are they really writing code for?  AND here's another point ... it used to work perfectly with FireFox until the new Label flow page came out and the Browser File Menu print functions were reduced to JUST a "Print" choice, no Printer set up, no Print Preview, etc.

@rfmtm   I meant to add this pic to my last post ... my AutoCAD program still carries many of the old File Menu Print functions with it and has for over 20 years (since I have been using it).  This is from a recent Revit of AutoCAD ... I prefer the menu driven toolbar format (across the top in the darker gray bar) opposed to the other tool displays they offer ... just what I am used to ... not to mention that takes up a lot less screen space.

Over the years I found for ebay (and PayPal) labels, that Edge often had issues as well as certain versions of Chrome.  Firefox while not perfect always was the most reliable, or at least the most responsive when any problem was reported to the Firefox development board.   While there have been scaling and other printing issues in Firefox, all that I know of were resolved some time ago.

Besides the half sheet label with and without the receipt, I tested all the label formats from ebay, and all worked and scaled in Firefox using the built in reader.

Did you check the Firefox Application list I suggested earlier?  As there may have been another reader, besides Firefox's built in reader and Adobe available, and that is the one enabled that has the problem.

I thought it was time to bring this issue back to the forefront for resolution.  Nothing at all has been done about this.  The thread I created back in March this year is not the earliest this problem has been around.  As of this writing the label size % still is not functional on one browser and not retained as a default on another browser.

This was happening last year too ...

Obviously, any help you can give to get this long standing issue resolved would be greatly appreciated.
