International GSP Return Issue

So I’ve never had an item sell before that shipped to Canada with the GSP and all so please bear with me.

Put a WWE wrestling belt for sale. Had some scratches on the front plate but I put several clear and up close photos on my ad of the entire belt (front, back, sides, close up of the scratches on the front plate).

Sold it for $95. Received a payment of $110.58 immediately. $95 for belt, $15.58 for shipping.

Few days later I get an email from the buyer saying they didn’t know it was scratched and would like to return it. We go back and forth since I made sure to put up pictures of any damage, eventually eBay steps in and tells me to accept the return and refund them the $95 plus $15 for shipping so they can send it back.

Messaged the buyer that I would be doing that and asked if I was shipping to the Kentucky location I originally sent it to. They told me no, that they used the GSP and they are in Canada and would like me to refund the $95 for the belt, $15 for shipping, plus add in an extra $75 to cover international shipping and importing costs for them to send it from Canada back to me in the US.

eBay had informed me to refund them the $110 by March 10 or risk having them automatically refund the buyer on my behalf and then they would not be forced to return the item.

My question is, am I basically just SOL and have to refund them $110 they paid for the belt and shipping plus pay $75 out of my own pocket to get my item back?

I checked with UPS and a return label from Canada to my location. would cost me about $50 plus any other import or other kind of fees that come after shipment so I would basically be in the hole $50 plus whatever fees to get my item back

Re: International GSP Return Issue

Sorry to hear about the frustrating situation. It's best to give eBay a call and explain the return issue - let them guide you instead of the resolution center. Also revisit your return policy - does it say buyer to cover return shipping costs?

Re: International GSP Return Issue

Well I posted my ad as “No Returns Accepted” but after their return request and when we had eBay step in, eBay informed to accept the return by March 10th or they would accept it on my behalf and refund the money from my account.

You made a grave, irreversible error @rytruj87 by allowing eBay to be asked to get involved.

Instead of waiting for eBay to walk away, you should have just paid for the $15 return fare from Kansas where you originally sent the boxer. Then if your buyer had not used the fare within 5 business days, you could have closed the return without a refund.

Now your choices are to either pay the $50 fare from wherever, or just outright refund the $95 plus $15 (the freight forwarder automatically refunds the $75 when you refund) with no return needed.

Re: International GSP Return Issue

You don't refund the buyer the item amount or original shipping fee until you receive the item back.  You are responsible for return shipping though since ebay has deemed the nad to be seller caused...not a gsp problem  But there may be a less expensive solution than UPS.   I have no idea what a wrestling belt weighs but if the belt and packaging is less than 2kg (4.4lbs)   they can use Canada Post tracked packet. I am guessing it weighs more than that though so they would have to send it using Canada Post expedited parcel USA.   You can figure out the postage at Canada Post as long as you know their postal code, the weight and dimensions.  You can change the calculator to imperial measurement if you want.  Here is a link....

eBay requires that you send the return shipping amount through Paypal before the buyer has to ship the item back.

The bolded part of your statement is incorrect.  When the buyer uses the gsp and files a snad claim and the problem was not caused by the gsp, the seller is required to pay return shipping from the buyer's location.

However, I agree that the seller did make a mistake allowing ebay to step in because now they are going to be out their fvf and they likely have an unresolved claim defect.

@rytruj87

You don't have to cover the original international shipping costs, or the import fees. Those were paid to the GSP, and when the full refund is processed, they will be reimbursed by Pitney Bowes, the company that runs the GSP. You will only need to refund the purchase price and the cost of shipping to KY that you received. But, you do need to pay for the return shipping up-front.

At this point, you need to find out what the cost is to return the item to you by Canada Post, and then send that much money to the buyer through PayPal.  The buyer should cooperate with you, but if they don't give you a breakdown of just the return shipping costs, you can log on to canadapost and find them out yourself based on the weight and dimensions of the package you sent. Once you have sent it, get the PayPal transaction number for the money that was sent and post it to the transaction in the Resolution Center.

Never use UPS or any other private courier for a cross-border shipment. They charge brokerage fees, and are always more expensive than the post office. Go with Canada Post.
