The infinite wisdom at eBay has made it impossible to do biz here. I'm not even going to get into the costs. Before you could list a freight item, determine the "rough estimate" and enter it on the invoice before the buyer could pay. This is no longer possible. You must enter a price before you can even list. The cost of freight shipping varies from one scenario to another, from one zip to another and can change by hundreds and sometimes even thousands. Its impossible to enter a price beforehand. Several years ago I was doing six figures on this site. Now I couldn't sell a thing and it's ENTIRELY because of ebay's ignorance. Even back then I still ended up paying out more than the billed price for nearly every shipment and that was via getting a detailed quote. There's no way in hell I'm slapping up items and potentially losing hundreds of not thousands of dollars per order.

Why can't you have those items crated up and will all the dimensions available, use calculated shipping?

Regular shipping doesn't handle freight items. As stated, it's nothing like reg shipping. The price can literally change from one zip code to the next adjoining zip. Also eBay isn't the only place to sell.

Just an example. I had a buyer purchase one of the mixers I currently have listed. I "had" to enter $500 shipping because I "have" to make sure my ass is covered. It actually only wouldve cost ~$400 without lift service.. With lift service it wouldve actually been around $500.. The buyer wanted to pick up at the terminal to save on the cost.. There nothing I can do. He either pays the $500 or I cancel the sale which is what I had to do.

In fact, every sale I've made in the last 90 days was cancelled for the same reason. Not sure why I continue to try, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

They use to use freight quote for freight items but I can tell you why they quit. It's because of what I describe, the price can change dramatically even with a quote.. what was happening is freight quote was coming in on the back end and charging more than the quote and it was pissing off the sellers so they dumped it . These freight cos are now notorious for this and as stated I'd say 75% of my deals ended up getting additional backend charges that I would have to eat. It's no fun eating a $125 lift service on a $400 item because sometimes that's all you'll be eating that week.

If you have the weight of the item , assume that it is going to the farthest state away from you . Then add a little bit to it to help cover the fees. If the buyer lives closer, you can always give them a partial refund on the shipping. That was what I was doing when I couldn't figure out calculated shipping years ago.

That's what I did on my one listing. But we're not talking a few dollars, we're talking hundreds and even then I could potentially still get hit on the back end.
