I think I'm being conned....

So I had someone buy a DS game from me and send me a message saying they wanted it shipped with tracking and without a packing slip the next day (I have 2 day handling as well). I messaged them and told them I would ship it in a first class envelope as per the auction description unless they wanted to pay a bit extra for tracking. They never even responded to that so I sent it in a first class envelope as the auction states.

10 days later I get a return request for item not arrived.

This seems so suspicious but I know ebay highly encourages tracking for this reason and I'm worried they will automatically side with the buyer. However, I explicitly stated in the auction what kind of shipping  they were getting and I've shipped these several times with no issues at all.

Help!

@tori_729 Refund the buyer. It’s your responsibility to purchase tracking. You aren’t eligible for seller protection through eBay OR paypal despite what your listings say. If you don’t have online viewable tracking showing delivery to the buyers zip code, you aren’t covered by seller protection. So you have to refund the buyer. You are the one forfeiting your seller protection when you ship without tracking. The buyer is still covered by the money back guarantee and PayPal buyer protection.

Yes, eBay will automatically side with the buyer because you did not protect yourself.

Also, by shipping it as a First Class Letter, you are risking damage to the game card as it passes through the automatic handling equipment ...

I actually shipped it nonmachinable so it wouldn't have gone through the machines.

It doesn't matter.  If you do not ship with online tracking, you can not EVERY win an INR claim.

I have no problem shipping with tracking since I never ship merchandise without it.  Ordinarily, I include a copy of my company invoice (cross referencing the eBay listing number) stamped "PAID" for the buyer's records.  However, I do send packing slip without pricing for those requesting it since they may be using the item as a gift.

Without tracking there is no way for you to show that the item was delivered.  There is nothing you can do other than refund the buyer.  I strongly urge you to use tracking on all your shipments in the future.  This will probably require that you ship them as First Class Packages instead of First Class Letters or Flats.

Non machinable does not mean it will not be sent through the sorting machines. ALL letters are dumped onto the belt. A roller will kick out the MAJORITY of letters that can't go through the automated canceling and sorting machines. A little flat DS cartridge may not be kicked out. The sorting and canceling machines travel at an extreme rate of speed.

Without tracking you have no way to validate that a buyer received their  purchase.  eBay policy clearly  states that the  seller is responsible to deliver sold/paid for items to the buyer in the same condition as  described.  Without tracking you have  zero proof.  Yes it is possible your buyer may have received the item but elected to open a INR case to get something for free - not all people are honest - the greater majority are - just read  your weekly jail log for your city/county.   I  call this  eBay 9or any other obuying site) shoplifting w/o any possibility of being arrested.

Protect yourself - USPS first class package  shipping is relatively  inexpense for items  weighing up to 15.99 oz.

Without online tracking, you have no proof the package was delivered.

Yes, they will side with the buyer.

Have a great day.

It may be a con, but it seems if conning you were the plan they would never have asked for you to ship with tracking to begin with.  Adding that statement just puts a spotlight on your listing that you are shipping with no safety net.  Most buyers know they are protected.  Regardless, you are liable.

You can't offer tracking as an extra-cost option. And as others have explained, tracking protects YOU, not the buyer.

Are you being conned? Maybe. But maybe the buyer is honest, and the item never made it to the buyer. You'll never know; but that's your fault.

Refund before eBay forces you to, and records a defect on your account.

Thanks guys. I definitely don't want a defect on my account. And I understand the whole tracking thing - I shouldn't have shipped an expensive item w/o it. I sometimes ship flat items that are worth less than $5 that way, but not usually anything higher value.

I understand the value of tracking now, haha! Live you learn!

I think what irks me is this person demanded I ship next day and with tracking and never responded at all after that to any personal messages. I *almost* shipped it tracking because of the shadiness of it. I should have went with my gut and sucked up the $3!

I sent them a personal message after they opened a case and no response. It just sounds like they don't like me and want me to pay lol. But you guys are right - it's on them, not me.

I put some comments up on the case about making sure the address was correct, checking w/ neighbors, etc. If they don't end up responding in a couple days I'll just refund them before Ebay steps in.

I appreciate the kind comments - a lot of times I get on here and feel like an idiot for whatever question I'm asking! 🙂

There is a difference between asking and demanding.  I took your original post as they asked you to ship with tracking and without a packing slip.  That to me tells me they are sending a gift to someone, not that a buyer is being unreasonable or trying to con me out of something.  Tracking is just a good business practice.  It protects both the buyer and the seller.  In this case, your buyer probably just wanted to follow the package and know when it got delivered to whomever they were having it sent to.  I just think you read far more into their request than was ever intended by the buyer.

You could look at this another way, since you shipped without tracking, the buyer may think you are shady.  I'm not at all saying you are, but it could be a perception since you didn't seem to want to work with your buyer on their request.  It is how it could have looked to them.  Just sayin!

They were probably upset with you because they had not asked for anything unreasonable but you treated them like they did.  So yes, they may be a little put out with you.  And if they sent a gift, they may not want to ask the person they sent it to, hey did you get the game I sent you?

I think you have this all wrong.  This is ON YOU, not them.  I'm not picking on you, I'm just saying you could have worked with your buyer instead of just doing it the way you wanted to without even considering why they were asking and assuming they were trying to take advantage of you.  And who knows, maybe the envelope never did arrive.  You have no way of knowing one way or the other.

I don't think your buyer was trying to scam you in any way.

Some sellers understand how to run a risk assessment as to whether it is worth sending without tracking.  For low risk, low price items the cost of tracking and the extra materials needed to make the mailpiece a package are not worth it.

Every seller should evaluate that risk for himself, rather than rely on the kneejerk tracking-at-any-cost strategy.
