I have an item that I sold and shipped, it arrived at there local post office went out for delivery but then said address unknown. The tracking said returning to sender. I have not heard from the buyer yet, but if I do, will I have to refund the shipping costs since I already spent the shipping funds to ship it to the address they specified to ship it to?

The short answer is no.
This is my standard advice for RTS (returned to sender) packages. Take the parts that are relevant to your situation.
You have a few options. You should decide which route you'll be taking and communicate with the buyer, but wait until the item is returned (and delivered) to you before you take any of the following actions.

The OP will pay Postage due to USPS for return shipping for ground advantage package back to sender .
