You can't over tape. Bubble wrap is best for breakable items. Never trust the peel and stick flaps on boxes or envelopes, always back up with tape. Don't use an envelope for breakable items. For heavy items strapping tape, the stuff with string in it is best. It must over wrap itself at least twice to be effective. Don't use packing peanuts for heavy items. They crush down and leave the item loose to be pummeled.
As stated, what are you shipping?

If you'd like packing advice, it would help if you gave a couple of specific items and let us know your current packing method / materials. Packing advice can vary greatly depending on the item you're shipping.

Packing your sold items | eBay
Pack it so that it will get there safely.
Don't cheap out on packaging.
A damaged item refund is more costly than a bit of care in packaging.

When I sold here I would double box items. Over stuff the first box with padding, place that box in another box and stuff padding around the box inside the box. I never had no problems. Sure the buyer would have to pull out tons of padding, but at least their items made it safe.

I have sold a bunch items since 1999, and only had3 or 4 incidents of damage. One of t he first things I learned by losing a book in shipment was not to ship books only in a paper shipping envelope. the envelope tore, and the book felll out. Most books i now ship in boxes. Book is put in a plastic bag for moisture protection, sleeved in cardboard, and then placed inside of the box with enough padding so that is is not moving aroud. I ordered 3 books from a big book seller on Ebay, and they all arrived, loose in the same poly envelope, with no padding whatsoever. Breakable things like bowls, mugs and other breakables I wrap in bubble wrap. I tape the bubble closed with several pieces of tape. One end of the tape I fold over to make a little flap, and mark with a black X to make it easier for customer to open, same with any tape inside the box or bag. Once the breakable item is wrapped in bubble wrap I make a tube of cardboard that extens 2" above and below the item. Place item in the tube, and fill void with blank packing paper, then I center the item in the shipping box. If it is a mug, I pont the handle toward a corner. then i use packing paer to fill the box. If I am shipping a large number of the same size breakables, I make an egg crate, with each space large enough to hold the bubble wrapped Items,
