How to ask for refund when the item was already returned to sender

Hi! I recently bought an Item. 

The item (due to no fault of the seller) was returned to him. I want my money back but there is not option for order cancelling once the item was shipped.

 

The seller is willing to give me a refund. But he tells me I need to cancel the purchase. 

 

Should I go with the return item to seller option so I can get my money back?

 

I payed through paypal balance.

UPDATE: When I originally tried to use the "Return item to sender option" I canceled because I didn't know what I was doing, and now it can be reopened. Is there ANY way that I can get my money back through ebay?

Don't make any more mistakes, don't talk to the seller any more, just get your money back:

 

1. File a dispute here for Item Not Received.

2. Go back and click Escalate to PayPal at the bottom.

3. DO NOT RESPOND if the seller contacts you now, for example promising a refund.

 

Since tracking doesn't show delivered, PayPal will issue a refund to your balance in about 11 days.

What was the reason it went back to the seller?

 

Actually it will depend on the reason why the package went back to the seller if this buyer gets a refund.

As the poster above you suggested, a Paypal inr claim should result in a refund as they are unlikely to take an 'attempted delivery' into account.

If the seller is willing to refund he may have initiated a cancellation.  On your overview / my ebay page look for the resolution center and see if a case is open awaiting your action.

Ohh god. I really, really hate ebay.

 

I got NO notification of any of these replies. I thought no one had answered. I get emails for everything I had no idea I had 5 very very helpful replies. (Heck when I entered the community I never even saw the notification icon lit). 

 

Unfornutanely it is now too late. The seller kept insisting that he was happy to give me a refund but I had to somehow initiate the action through Ebay and I literally saw no choice in how to do this. 

 

He ended up resending the item. I have no idea why the item was sent back to him. Since it's a toy that was sent from china, It's likely not the sellers fault but the mail's. Just to be clear. The item NEVER left china. The tracking clearly indicates it. 

 

I thought that elavating the dispute through paypal was pointless because there was no obvious "fault" in the seller. 

 

But he did keep insisting that Ihad to start the "cancelation" on my end. Could he have done it on his end and he lied to me?

PS: I literally JUST saw the option "Email me when someone repllies". I thought this was by default. Newbie here. Sorry.
