How big of a box can I put in the FedEx Express Drop Box, and if bigger do I just leave it there?

I remember there being a crazily overloaded drop off bin for FedEx at my college with packages stacked up on top of each other just out in the open. Seems kind of unsafe. What is the largest volume box I can drop in the FedEx Express Drop Box? Can I just leave a box that's bigger, and expect them to pick it up? Should I just wait until the guy comes by, and give it to him then?

Please let us know what the driver says - that will be very useful information.

Well, it looks like I missed him (he came early not 3:15pm) because I went to check (around 1:30pm), and the red/green turn dial was changed on the Express Drop Box, which presumably means he picked it up. I've been informed that the van is for express, and the big truck is for ground. I managed to get this tip from a local farm supply store that said that both come by, but not on a consistent basis. The farm supply owner said she will accept ground packages, but that it won't be delivered immediately. This leads me to believe that the logical thing that would happen (instead of return to sender), is that the express van guy will just drop my ground package off at this farm supply store since (hopefully) he knows that a ground truck guy will be by eventually to pick it up. It makes sense that FedEx employees would be that knowledgeable. All this and no update to my tracking. "Label created."

Actually... It says it hasn’t been picked up. The game is afoot. It was red when I dropped it off. Is it an automatic mechanism?

Some Staples stores take in FedEx packages or your office may have a FedEx drop box.

Alright, it’s 3:15pm right now, and still no pick up...

The life affirming conclusion is that she, the FedEx chick, came at 3:22pm and she said she’ll drop it off at a ground pick up center which is also where she drop off express packages. She said technically she’s not supposed to, but she does it anyway.

Re: How big of a box can I put in the FedEx Express Drop Box, and if bigger do I just leave it there

Good.

So what we learned here is that Ground packages are NOT supposed to go in Express Drop Boxes, and if they do, what happens next will depend on locale, temperament of the Express Pickup driver, and local FedEx policies.

In your case, driver will drop them at a location that also happens to be a Ground nexus, but in other locations that may not be possible or may not be the local policy.

Dropping Ground packages in Express boxes or dropping them off at retail locations that don't have regular or don't have late in the day Ground pickups can/will result in shipping delays of a day or more. To ensure prompt shipping of FedEx Ground packages, locating a dropoff that has well defined and regular Ground pickups or handing them to a FedEx Ground Driver* is the approach.

*FedEx Ground drivers can be difficult to find, but best bet is business or commercial areas early in the day when they are making commercial deliveries. FedEx (like UPS) tends to do commercial in the morning and residential delivery in late afternoon, but that varies by locale, route, etc. (UPS is a bit easier in that respect as any brown UPS truck will take Express or Ground)

Yes, and that farm supply shops are worth asking if they are ground drop spots.

I just checked my tracking: It's "in transit" now in a city 50 minutes north of here even though the FedEx Shipping Center I used to go to is 30 minutes east of here. Interesting.

Also try Kinkos and Office Depot ... and like someone else said ... Walgreens (I just looked at my locator on the FeEx site ... it looks like ALL of the local Walgreens are taking FedEx Drop offs now)

Walgreens and FedEx are currently working on pick up at all 8000 Walgreens in the nation and it is supposed to be implemented by fall 2018. To top it off my Walgreens does an acceptance scan while I watch and ask if I want an email notification of acceptance.

Very helpful information. Now that you mention it, I went to a local Walgreens around valentines day, it’s one that I never go to because it’s on the bad side of town and I have no reason to go there, there’s another one in a better part of town but I usually go to CVS or Target however Walgreens sells a particular stuffed animal my kids like. Anyway I noticed that this particular Walgreens had a FedEx counter! I didn’t think anything of it at the time since I was on a mission LOL. But this totally explains it! They’ve partnered with fedex and there are fedex counters in a lot of their stores now. Which is convenient.
