How an item is refunded for shipping

If a buyer pays for shipping and decides they do not want it (there is nothing wrong with the item so no fault of the seller...), and for example pays 20 dollars for the item and 4 bucks to ship... Does the seller refund 20 dollars or 24 dollars? This would be when seller (me) does not offer free shipping and charges an additional fee to the buyer. I have the box checked that buyer pays for return shipping if there is nothing wrong with the item, but I am talking about refunds on the upfront shipping buyer paid. Any info would be great, thanks!

When you charge separately for shipping, you can refund the item price only on a buyers remorse return. So the refund for this would be $20.

If it's a regular return and buyer paid the original shipping, when you refund, it gives you a choice to give a full refund or refund item price only.

I can't believe the answers are so inconsistent.  🙂

My experience with refunds (and I've had a lot) is that you can choose.  The eBay interface defaults to a refund of 20 dollars, but you can select that you also want to also refund the shipping costs ... if you do this, then that's a refund $24.

Most sellers refund $20.   I almost exclusively would refund $20, but there was once that I refunded $24 because I felt that there was some ambiguity with the listing that caused confusion.

Well I just now got a notice of a return and once again eBay doesn't protect the Seller. The item is a silk blouse with a label saying 100% pure silk and lining: acetate.  My buyer gives the reason that "the blouse was listed as 100% silk but the blouse is acetate and the lining is silk!?!?!?!  Say what?  She is young and only has 75 feedback and obviously CAN'T READ and too lazy to look at the pictures of the label.  And eBay approved the return. How can we stop this? I called eBay and was told that once I get the package back, I can appeal the return but the only thing I would get is the postage I was forced to pay to get the return......and holding my breath that she doesn't leave a negative feedback!  It just gets very frustrating sometimes and I have a knack for getting the inexperienced buyers who never write to you before starting a return.  I could have told her quite simply to go put her glasses on and read the label again. We Sellers should get together and put a book together with dumb and dumber experiences with buyers!    It wouldn't accomplish anything but sure would feel good!
