Help with customer wanting a return not sure if scam or not

Hello,

Backround info, I sell computers on my account and have had really good luck selling them.  I stress test them before selling to make sure they are good.  I recently sold a desktop PC to someone and they said that when they received it they heard rattling inside and opened the computer up to find out the release tab for the graphics card was broken.  Now for those that aren't tech savvy those release tabs are hard to break they are designed to be pulled up to release the graphics card there's no way that would have broken in transit, and I never removed the original card so this tab was like new.  I think they were trying to remove the card and pulled it too hard and it snapped.  They did provide pics and I told them that it would not affect performance they would probably just need a screw driver to release the card now to lift up on what was left of the tab.  They were ok with this then asked about what was a good graphics card to replace the one in it.  I gave some suggestions.

Next they contacted me today saying the DVD drive is really loud and doesn't read their disc.  I asked if they tried other discs and they said they did and it was all the same thing.  I offered to ship them a brand new disc drive and they said no they want a full return and refund since this computer has been more trouble than it's worth and they have no idea how to work on computers and wouldn't know how to replace it.  This was a red flag for me since they were talking about replacing the graphics card in a prior message now they don't know how to work on computers?

So I told them to initiate the return and sent them the link in the ebay support page to do this and NOW they are refusing saying they spent all their money on this PC and don't have enough money to ship it back to me.  What should I do on this?  I don't want to get flagged over something stupid or a potential scam.  I have had really good luck with selling PCs and have had very happy customers doing it don't want a blemish on my account.

Go silent and don't respond, wait for your buyer to make the next move, if any. They have 30 days from actual delivery.

I would just keep responding with "Please return for refund" until they open a case or disappear. If they open the return as defective/SNAD, as they are claiming, they won't have to pay for return shipping - you will.

They may be telling the truth, but it seems more likely that they want the item and the money.

I have watched my son gut a computer in about five minutes, how do you know that what they return is what you sent, they opened it all by themselves but then suddenly know nothing about computers.  I agree with the go silent remark, make them initiate the return through Ebay so you have some protection.  Your shipping requirement are clearly stated, if it says returns are responsibility of buyer that is their problem.

If the buyer opens a return claiming that the item is not working/not as described it doesn't matter what the seller's return policy is. The seller is responsible for paying for return shipping in that situation.

Not if the buyer says the item is defective and files an INAD, then the seller will have to pay return shipping.

Have a great day.
