Help! Can I reroute a Priority package back to me to stop a scammer!?

Hi eBayers!

I accepted an offer on my item (a graphics card) and didn't properly check out the buyers details. He had 32 positive feedback and been on eBay since Nov 2017 so at first glance all looked good. But then I started getting a lot of messages from him making me feel uncomfortable (you know that vibe you get when someone starts acting like they are setting the stage for a dispute? - "gee I hope you packed it well enough", "oh I hope the GPU works 100%", "why do the details say for a 970, but the auction is for a 960", etc etc). When the buyer starts nit picking the listing and settng up excuses. Sigh.

Anyway I googled his "address" and there were all kinds of complaints over the years that this address belong sto scammers under various names (al of them unsual sounding). Well I mapped it and turns out the address is a frieght forwarding company in the US which ships things over to Russia.

So now alarm bells are really clanging my head. I shipped the package out today. I used priority mail which I purchased the label through PayPal using their "multi-order shipping tool". I tried using the USPS website tracker to see if I could re-route it back to me so I can void the transaction and refund this persons money, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change it. Can I call the post office or is there another way I can stop this before it goes any further?

Hi thank you for this. Unfortuantely the online form is saying that I am putting in an invalid last name for the detsination address even though I am using the exact (copy / paste) name from the shipping label... what the heck? They are using a Russian (or Georgian) name but there are no unusual characters in it.

What is this hack magic?

EDIT - OK I had to manually (and carefully) enter the name for some reason. Not sure if that's a nother interesting twist on their part. I did notice the name didn't match the user account and so on.

Anyway thank you although this did cost me ANOTHER $13.45 on top of the $12 something I originally paid for priority shipping. Ouch. Oh well lesson learned. 😞

What was it you sold?   There really isn’t any additional risk when shipping to a freight forwarder.  Once it reaches the US destination you’ve done your job with eBay.  If the buyer files a case after its forwarded they have lost their buyer protection. They can still win with PayPal but they would have to pay international shipping with tracking back to you and many times that’s not worth it.

A graphics card would be a high-scam item — my understanding is that high-end graphics cards now figure prominently in bitcoin mining, so they're high-priced, high-demand items.

 

However, I'm glad you pointed out that the OP doesn't seem to realize that forwarding services are not, in and of themselves, signs of trouble — in fact, they make things considerably easier when dealing with buyers in foreign countries.

 

I myself recently completed a couple of transactions with a buyer in Chile who used a forwarding service in Florida. Easy peasey.

I understand your anxiety about dealing with a buyer who pokes and prods you like that when you're dealing with a pricey item. But FYI, you should be aware that using a forwarding service — even one where you turn up info on Google like you say — actually makes things relatively easy for eBay sellers taking orders from overseas. The fact that scammers have been known to use them means a lot less than you seem to think.

 

As @myangelandmyprincess points out, your responsibility as seller largely ends once the service takes delivery. Right away, that takes away the risk of non-delivery to a foreign country. It was delivered to the address to which you were told to ship, end of story. Also, eBay assumes that the forwarding service is responsible for any damage incurred after it leaves their hands. So you're not liable in their eyes.

 

Forwarding services are more and more common these days because the cost of international shipping has gone up insanely in the last five years or so, so buyers who are active on eBay.com find it economical to use a service that will collect and consolidate stuff that they buy online — combine shipping from multiple sellers, as it were. Also, I'm sure that there are buyers who are just sick and tired of dealing with sellers who refuse to ship outside the U.S. Nothing more sinister to it than that.

Guys I appreciate your comments, but I DID additionall research that showed that this buyer has pulled this scam multiple times on other buyers (usually high end phones and expensive computer components) as well as the frieght forwarder he/she/it was using has had HUNDREDS of complaints from other eBay sellers sending items and getting defrauded.

In addition his shipping name and member name were variations of each other (another red flag) and multiple similar names were found on other eBay accounts filled with bad feedback.

There are a HIGH number of red flags on this transaction and I have doen this long enough to make the determination MYSELF on MY item that this seems likely to end in a fraudlent claim against me. Having been burned in the past I'm just not willing to move forward.

You have to understand that sending an item to a freight forwarder is not the only issue. Any buyer can claim the item is defective and you as the seller are screwed. The buyer doesn't even have to return the item. It takes a lot of fighting to even hope to win this types of disputes and a quick search on these forums can confirm that.

If you frieght forward to legitimate customers and are happy - GREAT! Glad to hear that you are having good success and I wish you well 🙂

Please don't presume that I'm naive (nor racist nor xenophobic) enough to NOT ship to a freight forwarding company based soley on that one factor.
