Free local pick up

Why won't EBay allow free local pick-up on ALL items?  I believe it would allow sales to increase on larger items.  That equals increased sales for sellers, and increased revenue for EBay!

They do - IF you set up your listing to include free local pickup.

But if you're going to limit sales to local why even bother listing it here?

Free local pick up

I'm not considering strictly local pick up. I added it to all my listings as an option for local buyers to save money. Thanks, EBay!

It is not up to eBay. It is up to the seller to decide if he wishes to permit customer pickup of goods they sell.  I believe, as mentioned, eBay permits sellers to offer it on all listings, but the option rests with the individual seller.

Depending upon the seller's location, it may not be legal for a seller to offer it owing to local zoning laws.  Also there are many sellers that, operating out of their home, find it uncomfortable to do so.

I rarely offer local pick-up. My time is valuable and it never fails that 9 out of 10 times someone is supposed to be here at a certain time they either are several hours late or do not show.

Last time was the sale (local page, not ebay) of the appliances from my daughters house remodel. Lady that called about the stove saw the dishwasher and wanted it too. But it had already been spoken for and she got really pissy with us. I told her that it and the fridge were also listed in the same page. Mad, she stomped off without the stove, only to call back 2 days later stating she was on the way over to pick it up.

She wasn't happy to be told since no money was exchanged, it was sold, paid for and picked up by someone else.

Mind, not all local pick-ups turn out bad. I even reconected with a old co-worker when she answered a ad I placed selling the old hay loft floorboards when I replaced the loft flooring a few years ago. Just saying that local pick-up is a lot more work than filling a box and printing a label.

I always love local pickups, CASH ONLY.  Done, no eggshells to walk on for 6 months.  I encourage them if I can.

I've run into the same issue as well

I have been able to offer free local pick up on all but 2 of my listings

one is just a small fuel line connector and the other is a 2 bank battry charger

for some eason it says local pickup only with flat rate shipping and that makes no sense

Now i love doing local pickup and my time is valuable too and that is why i always have them come to my property and not meet them somewhere else. but i have my own shops at home so i'm not wasting time, i'm getting projects done and sometimes don't realize that people were late. no skin off my back for no shows. i can see others it could bother if  they specifically stayed home or try meeting deadbeats at the police station or some other public place, yes it can be wasteful to them.

Lately i've been having alot of local pickups going on especially with using craiglist

That's a great idea to add local pickup. I got some really good deals over the years by being able to bid higher without having to pay shipping. The seller got more money that way too.

Just curious: what makes you think eBay will not allow sellers to offer local pickup on all items?

Free Local Pick Up is allowed, however, I would not accept PP for the item.  eBay will not allow a listing for LPU w/o offering PP as a payment method and from some other threads on the Selling Board, it can backfire on the seller, including "attempting to conduct an off eBay transaction.)

I think that it is great that you would like to save your buyers shipping - but in the long run, it may backfire if you cannot prove the item was shipped and received 😞
