When I use the eBay calculator and include First Class Mail as an option, it provides a low price, such as $1.60 for a 2 ounce package (I use a 6x9 padded envelope).
However, when the item sells, and the buyer selects First Class free shipping, my cost is something like $3.09 or more. Am I missing something? Perhaps, I should just purchase First Class postage outside of eBay. - Mike

I just sold an item -- 2 oz., First Class PACKAGE, calculated shipping.
The buyer was charged $1.20 postage.
I am charged $2.78 postage.
There is something wrong with the calculated shipping.

When you set up calculated shipping there are two menus: One for service and one for package type. If you choose "First class package" as the service, then that's what will show in the listing. But if you set the 'Package type" to "Large envelope" then that's what the buyer will be charged for. In your case, $1.20 is the correct postage for a 2-ounce flat (AKA Large envelope). It's a significant interface flaw which eBay programmers either can't fix or don't care about.

Thank you. Now I see what happened.
I did choose First Class Package under the shipping service, but then further down, for "Package Type" it does say Large Envelope.
It certainly is a glitch -- to allow sellers to choose Large Envelope and then not allow us to purchase postage to ship Large Envelopes.

To further clarify the amount you were charged would be the correct amount unless you want to ship without tracking. And then you have to go to the Post office ebay doesn't offer to print labels for that service. If you want to ship with tracking you just need to select package as the package type instead of large envelope

The ebay shipping calculator is wrong (low) 30% of the time, and ends up costing me money. I am using USPS shipping calculator outside of ebay now and am getting accurate results. I don't know why they don't care, and don't fix.

Did you read the thread? There is nothing for eBay to fix. You are setting up many of your listings so they are charging buyers the postage cost for a First Class flat (AKA Large envelope) rather than for a First Class package.
