Fedex and UPS overcharge

Hey fellow eBay sellers,

I've got to vent a bit and see if I'm the only one scratching my head over here. Remember that email from eBay back in September 2023 about how they were gonna start charging us for FedEx and UPS shipping labels right when we print them?  This is exactly what they said "Currently, shipping cost estimates for FedEx® and UPS® shipping labels are provided at the time of printing, and actual costs are charged after delivery. In the coming weeks, we will begin charging for all shipping labels at the time they are printed."

Well, something's fishy. Just today, I got hit with a FedEx charge three times what I expected. My package was supposed to be 2.0 pounds, but they said, "Nah, it's 1.5 pounds," and still charged me 3 times more. Same dimensions just the weight is less. And then there's UPS, slapping an "additional handling" fee on another package of mine, doubling the cost without a peep about why. What gives?

I've seen a bunch of us getting these weird charges where the math just doesn't add up. eBay did step in and sort one out for me (kudos for that), but if we're all running to customer service for this, isn't that a sign something's off at the starting line?

Shouldn't eBay be chatting with FedEx and UPS to cut out these bonkers overcharges? It's like, if the weight goes down, how does the price shoot up? 🤔

I'm really hoping it's not just me seeing this. Have any of you had similar run-ins? How did you deal with it? More importantly, do you think there's a way we can nudge eBay to maybe, you know, revisit how this whole shipping charge thing works?

For eBay company's perspective, if they get this right or at least better, it will drive less seller contact customer service for help and reduce their cost on customer service.  That is scalable solution.

Looking forward to hearing your stories and maybe, just maybe, coming up with some genius plan to bring back some sanity to our shipping costs.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

Same here…2x with fed ex and 4x with UPS.   All my weighs and dimensions are accurate and even took them in and had them verify.   I lost nearly $250 with these upcharged and no one will help.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

25 years of selling on ebay and I have to say I am up against the worst headwinds and lack of control I have ever seen. We just got hit with 7 of these random over charges from fedex shipping fees from ebay all the same day, lower weights and all accurate shipping sizes but we were charged 2x or more on fees. After these fees all 7 items sold have becomes a loss and items would not have been sold or shipped off when ebay publised the shipping fees to us at time of sale and shipping. we are in business for a profit as ebay and every other seller on ebay is as well. The platform has continued to create new rules and new issues. As fees continue to rise and new rules implemented to take away controls as a seller.  What I have gathered is that many power sellers are noticing these fees and charges. What Ebay has told a few sellers its a glitch and these fees will be fixed. I have yet to file my grievance and will call in later today.  Stay focused and make sure you follow up on what you are deserved to earn.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

I AM BEING RIPPED OFF EVERY MONTH, THEY GOT ME FOR OVER $1000 LAST YEAR 2023. I HAD ENOUGH, IMAGINE THE LARGE CORPORATIONS NOT TAKING NOTICE. YES, EBAY SHOULD SOLVE THIS MATTER.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

Stop using FedEx on eBay. They will rip you off every time. This is happening to me more and more and I will not be using them again the fact is I went into the store and had the wait and dimensions verified this time by two employees and they still overcharged me. Stop using FedEx.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

I have learned that lesson the hard way as well. Stop using FedEx on ebay. They will overcharge you every chance they get despite it not being correct. The last time I shipped with them I took the package into the store and had two employees verify all of the dimensions and the weight it was verified by two employees in the store and yet I was charged double the amount that I had already paid. FedEx claim that the package was 4 lb over the weight that both employees in the store verified. Stop using FedEx. They will continue to rip you and me off. Easy fix.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

They are still doing it. I shipped 1 golf club, in a premade 4x4x48 box, which weighed 3.1 lbs. UPS is now saying the package was 5x4x49 and it weighed 40 lbs. I admit I make mistakes but 36 lbs for a golf club? Before they charge my credit card, they should have to show proof. Right now, you get customer service to call you and they say they will reach out to UPS.

I will quit using Ebay for shipping.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

I too have been a victim of surprise Fed Ex up charges for the 4th time this year.  This time, the surcharge was an additional $35.93 over an initial shipping chage of $29.32.  So, total shipping of $65.25.  All for a 39" x 6" x 6: packiage weigng 13 pounds.  Fed Ex's stated reason for the additional surgharge on the package was it was an "irregular" shaped package.  Really???  This package was a 39" x 6" x 6" ROUND tube!  Yes, a ROUND tube!  I guess Fed Ex considered the additional duct tape on the end caps to keep the contents from falling out made the package "irregular" in shape. Well, if that's the way they want to do business, then I too will cease doing business with them.

BTW this is not the first time we have shipped in this identical type package.  But, it is the first time we have been chargerd an additional surcharge.  And for sure, will be the last with Fed Ex.

Re: Fedex and UPS overcharge

I just got nabbed by Fedex for an additional $34.73 for a so called irregular packaging and it boggles my mind.  I paid $14.02 to ship a 9x21x3 5lb package (computer keyboard in it's retail boxing). And this is something I've done hundreds of times over the years and this is the first time that it's apparently a problem, but it doesn't make sense why it is. If an item in it's retail packing/box is secure from being damaged to the point where I could drop it off a 75 foot building play frisbee with it etc, without it being damaged, ideally I'm not going to put it in another box (and I rarely have a keyboard thin, long box available, so in the event I put it in a second box, it can be a time consuming concoction, but the main area of concern is protecting the shipment from any potential damage in shipping). So I have the first problem solved - my item is beyond reasonably secured from potential damage, however I don't want it advertised to the world that this is an Asus blah blah blah keyboard, so I'll cover the entire thing with brown shipping paper (like you would a present, sounds like a lot of work, it's not... I have 3" tape a few go rounds will get it covered) and lastly I cover every square inch of the shipping paper with tape... since the paper is paper thin and I don't want it tearing.  As a result there's no fluctuation to the length width, height from one side to the other. (it's a perfect solid rectangle with no give)... nothing about that creates an inconvenience or an additional cost to FedEx.

Worst of all, from now on I'm going to have to build a new box everytime to put an already secure item from damage in it which in turn will also potentially increase the length width and height increasing the shipping cost and for what (I wouldn't mind if there's was a logical reason for it)? It's frustrating... because I already have certain maticulous issues with shipping things causing me longer to prepare a shipment that it reasonably should, so now I can add one more piece of paranoia to add to my shipping process.
Other than that I've been happy with Fedex though and they've been giving me the best pricing. UPS is too expensive and from what I gather they have just as many shenanigans.  I still use USPS, but usps has been ridiculously unreliable for me (they used to not be).
