Fedex...I feel like a newbie

Hi,

I have a 30 x 17 x 15 box. it's only 9lbs. Mostly packaging material inside.

This is significantly lighter than the dimensional weight if I am following the instructions  on the learn more tab they give you on ebay.

If I did my math right I get a dimensional weight of 47lbs. But it's interesting when I enter 47lbs into the screen the price stays the same. Does the correct price auto populate via ebay then for those dimensions? There is no difference in price between 9 and 47lbs are these dimensions. Also, do I enter the 47lbs even though its only 9lbs? Am I over thinking? I wanted to start using Fedex more for big items and I want to be sure I have it right. Thanks much!

You have now found the Ebay/FedEx/UPS "RACKET". I have yet to get an answer from Ebay on this and USP/FedEx WILL bill you what they want when it is delivered, regardless of what the calculator says. My suggestion to you on this one that is so light but large would be to just go pay for it at the UPS or FedEx retail store. You can then upload the tracking in to Ebay that they provide you with. I would not buy shipping on Ebay for this one or you will likely have a problem later with the cost.

If you must use FedEx either get your own account or take it to a store that ships FedEx packages. Many sellers have been very surprised when they get the final bill, remember the charges you see are only an estimate.

The "calculator" SHOULD account for "Dimensional Weight".....but it does not half the time and nobody seems to know why. Why do we put in the weight AND dimensions?? We should NOT need to do some offline stupid calculation......they don't at the retail stores.

The dimensional weight is 56lbs, not 47lbs

And still I ask....Why should we have to fool with this when we input the weight AND dimensions.....is their calculator stupid?

My theory is that manually entering ANY weight overrides any dimensional weight and trumps everything. In short, the system assumes whatever you put in was calculated correctly.

I ship Fedex ALL THE TIME and have never experienced one overcharge that others speak of. Whether it's luck or being careful, I don't know.

I see where the problem is. The divisor on Ebay says 166 and it's 139 on the calculator which is why I was getting a 10lb difference.

Dimensional weight applies when the package is relatively light compared with its volume. If the dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight, charges based on the dimensional weight will be assessed. To calculate dimensional weight:

  • Multiply length by width by height in inches.
  • Divide by 166 and round up to determine the dimensional weight in pounds.

I am going to roll with it as entered and not enter the dimensional weight. If they bill me for more then so be it. Thanks everyone!!

I agree, why offer something if the calculations are sketchy at best!

I personally think eBay should keep their mitts out of shipping and authentication of products - they obviously don't excel at either.

USPS uses a divisor of 166 when figuring dimensional weight.  IIRC, FedEx used to, so the info quoted is either outdated or referring just to USPS.

USPS: L x W x D / 166

FEDEX: L x W x D / 139

UPS: L x W x D / 139 (Daily rate)

          L x W x D / 166 (Retail rate)

So.... can sellers start having a hidden fee for going to the post office.....my mileage X 55 cents a mile....can I bill the buyer later or will Ebay be paying it?? I mean....if we sellers are charged ridiculous hidden fees then why should we not be able to charge some too.... My guess id this "dimensional weight" **bleep** is hidden for a reason.....RACKET!!!
