Hello,
I had a buyer falsely accuse me of selling a counterfeit College textbook. I bought this book from my local community College and showed him the receipt. I have a no-refund policy as I sell all my used stuff. EBay gave the seller a full refund without my permission and charged me to ship it back. They will not allow me to appeal the decision at all. This costs me money and I have been falsely accused of a crime.

They don't need your permission to refund a buyer when they file an INAD.
You're lucky they had the buyer send the book back, they could have refunded them and let them keep the book.
Since Ebay had to refund, they also gave you a defect on your account for not handling the return.

"I have a no-refund policy..."
^^^ There's no such thing. And 'No Returns' and no refunds are two different beasts entirely. Forget what the buyer has accused you of... you're not a crook. Write this up to another lesson learned... always approve a Return if the buyer claims that your item is Not As Described; protect your Seller Metrics. (You'll have to pay return shipping, but you'll have your book back to resell.) I find that if an item sells once, it will again. Good luck moving forward.

Slightly off topic, but I wouldn't think there is any such thing as a counterfeit college textbook. Although most of them are expensive, there isn't a big enough market for any particular book to make it worthwhile for a counterfeiter.
The only exception I could think of would be a Xeroxed copy in a loose leaf binder, which would be obvious.

Hey I get it! You feel accused and attacked by this buyer. And that has to stink! yeah, this buyer knew how to "work the process"' and get a free return. Fortunately eBay had the item shipped back as it could have been a Maximum Loss = lose the item and the money.
Believe me, I've been in your shoes and had many sleepless nights over stuff like this. For me part of the "fix" was swallowing my pride and accepting that returns are a part of selling. Yeah, it was a hard pill to swallow, but once I did I was able to take emotions out of things and view this as a business problem - one to be solved!
Oh, like you, I thought I'd just have a 'no returns' policy and avoid the whole "returns" issue. Then a few buyers claimed 'not as described' (NAD) and I stood on my principles with the 'no returns' policy. I ended up getting run over by eBay's Money Back Guarantee (MBG). That meant eBay just refunded the buyer from my funds and didn't require them to return the item - I got hit with a MAXIMUM LOSS! Oh I came on these threads and screamed and yelled and boy did I scream. Eventually a few patient and persistent posters knocked the stubborn out of me.
So as mentioned, I eventually came to accept that rightly or wrongly, returns are just part of retail selling. After I accepted this I also figured out that when a return 'happens' that the seller was going to lose money and how much money I lost depended on what actions I take or didn't take. So this became a 'business problem', something to solve. It also meant I had to change my thinking and not take returns personally - just a problem looking for a solution.
So eventually I was able to get a plan in place, thanks to the posters here. This did a few things for me - took away the shock of returns as now I had a plan in place and knew what to do - just work the plan! Next I learned to have financial backing so that the 'economic shock' of returns was eliminated. So here is what I came up with as a plan for returns.
• Acceptance of the fact that rightly or wrongly returns are part of retail selling
• Fixed my listings- Write descriptions like there were no pictures & Photograph as if there was no description
• Read the MBG to understand my responsibilities as a seller on eBay for when returns happen
• Tax each sale by 5% and set aside the funds as a self insurance fund - when returns happen I had money to pay
• Never assume any money from a sale is "mine" to spend until 31-days after delivery scan - allows for MBG protections to expire.
• Learn techniques to use to head off scams if they appear to be happening
• Understand what to do when fraud happens, techniques that often get me made whole.
So once I implemented all of that, a return was nothing more than a nuisance - just work the plan. No need to get upset or emotional just follow the steps and minimize loss. This part was HARD for me, but I got there! With the self insurance fund, there was no panic, because I had monies set aside to pay for return shipping or make up for losses. As I started, I had to set aside 100% of the profits from the first few sales to build up the Fund. After that the rest is gravy.
So that is how I reconciled with the MBG and returns and kept selling here. Perhaps some of that would work for you?
Best wishes with your selling!

Well you had the option to refund after return or refund with out return: eBay had to step in and since you do not do returns refunded them
NO RETURNS does not mean no refund;
Buy listing on ebays site you agree with the buyers garantee:
https://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/
As for text books such are well produced in china and are counterfeit... or at the least may infringe on the copyright holders rights... Note some are produced with permission of holder..... Some resold items in them stores you purchased from are questionable. Just saying....
eBay has no idea what you sent: so they have to find for the purchaser...
A bad experience: yet learn from it..

Thank you for writing this insightful post! I am struggling with the same issue as the poster and I really just needed someone to tell me all of these things right now. I hate when the 'bad' person wins but you are so correct that it is just part of retail. I feel lighter already lol!

OK, glad it helps!
For me the last two bullet points are important as one doesn't have to be an unwitting victim. But sometimes you can't win over the forces of evil, so having the plan in place sure helps!
I think all sellers go through something like this and if one can find a way through they can have nice success! I'll say this -you found this place and the knowledgeable posters. Many don't or just wanna vent and then wash out. So coming here and having an open mind puts you head & shoulders over quite few!
Hang in there and don't be afraid to come back here and ask for help! I know this place sure helped me!

Thank you for your response,
I have decided to stop selling on ebay as I only sell my used items and its not worth it for me to deal with this and all the fees I pay.

Gosh, will be sorry to see you go! But hey if that is what you decide is best for you, then who can argue.
I just think making a few changes in the way one operates isn't all that difficult. I mean I did it and thus anyone should be able to do it too!
So if you change your mind about leaving, you now know of a resource you can use to help you along!
Best wishes!
