I know now never to ship using FedEx. I shipped a package with them and they damaged it and posted. I filed a claim after refunding to the buyer. They destroyed the package did not deliver it at all and denied my claim that it was their fault. I called and spoke to an agent that had no clue what to do. Asked for my phone number and said that someone might call me about my complaint about being denied my claim for their poor performance as a delivery company. VERY BAD COMPANY TO USE FOR SHIPPING. Any carrier "insurance" is hard to collect on, FedEx is not alone in this. You have to know you are going to have the occasional damaged item, no matter how well you ship. When someone in the shipping chain drops the 50lb box on top of your item, or runs the forklift tine through the boxes instead of the pallet things are going to get damaged.
Most sellers know that they need to build a little "self-insurance" fund to cover these losses.
I ship a lot of porcelain, and there's no difference in the rate of breakage comparing FedEx to USPS. Proper packaging is key, but it can't protect you from everything.

I have gone around and around with FedEx numerous times on breakage and other damage. It's always been a PITA. Last time they tossed it in the bed of the farm truck. Farm truck has a spray in bed liner and sitting slightly downhill during heavy rains it had 5 or 6 inches of water in the bed. Item was in there 2 days as I hadn't checked tracking. It was listed with USPS shipping but the seller shipped FedEx for some reason. It was a manual for the used Ventrac I had purchased. Needless to say it was totally destroyed.
Odd thing is it would have been safely in my mailbox for a lot less than what the seller paid FedEx. FedEx could have put it on the seat of the farm truck where UPS puts packages when it is raining. Oh and did I mention that the last time I had used the truck was to take a load of half composted manure to a neighbor for her raised beds, so the water in the bed was a weak manure tea.
