guys - I'm selling a pretty common product and ebay calculated $5.30 for shipping between 2 neighboring states but their own shipping calculator has the cheapest rate being usps priority for this 4lb box at $8.50
Is it common for ebay to make such mistakes and do you folks use the 'automatically calculated' shipping option when selling?
Thanks

.....ebay calculated $5.30 for shipping between 2 neighboring states
....but their own shipping calculator
I am confused....both are calculated by ebay? but they are different....are you saying 1 is from the ebay calculator and one id from the listing page? (2 different places) If so, shipping is determined by category, height, width, weight and destination distance,,,,,,one of those elements are different between the two different calculations

All I did was specify 4lb and dimensions of package on listing and they are accurate. But the payment shows shipping was only $5.30 to buyer and my shipping costs when printing label is $8.50

I did not see a sale to check out what might be happening. Do you have a similar listing or an item number to see what they buyer is seeing so maybe I can help you out? When you get to your label page, the 5.30 option should be there in the list somewhere.....(as a choice to you when printing)

I almost always use calculated shipping in my listings and I have never seen an error. I looked at your Sold listings and the only two from March that show up for me have Free shipping. Could you please share the listing number or a link to the listing? It would also be helpful to know the buyer's ZIP Code. Thanks.

$5.30 sounds like 1st Class, but being over 1 pound, it must ship Priority. What size and weight did you input for this item for the calculator to calculate only $5.30?

$5.30 is a first class mail price for an item (between 2 neighboring states as you state) about 10 oz.
If you try to print a label for a 4 lb. package, the least expensive priority price would be for a SFRB but if your item doesn't fit in a small flat rate box, you'd have to use other packaging and it might be more expensive.

Specifically, $5.30 is the retail cost for a 5-8 oz First Class package shipping to zone 6.
Where exactly did eBay show you the $5.30 price @iodlee?
Did you use the eBay shipping calculator and enter 5 oz instead of 5 lb?
Assuming this is for the irrigation system where you offered free Priority shipping. Online rates for a 5 lb Priority package that's under a cubic foot are $8.45 zone 1 increasing to $24.01 zone 8.

Too hard to figure out what occurred here but I have a simple solution - in the future, I'll simply put weight as 3lb over actual and thus avoid any ebay mistakes

I just printed out a label at home for an item that I had listed with calculated shipping cost. The item weight was correct on the listing. The buyer paid $8.34 for shipping, but when I went to print and purchase the shipping label the actual charge is $12.84 to send it USPS Priority, which is what the buyer chose as preferred. This has happened at least twice to me, so yes, I think something is "off" with eBay's calculation for shipping.
I was able to send the item via UPS for $10.20 so slightly better than having to eat over $4 additional shipping costs.
Now I feel like I need to add more weight to all of my listings to "pad" the shipping costs.

I've been on eBay since the early 2000's and had thousands and thousands of transactions and use calculated shipping and it's always been right as long as I input the info correctly.

Nope, because lets say you input it as 10 pounds and it's only 7 then buyer can claim you didn't ship right item as what they received was way underweight of what you claimed.

And then a savvy buyer who looks at BOTH cost AND delivery charges will not buy from you because your shipping is too high. I have never had a problem with eBay's calculator. So, when you eliminate all other options (well I'm sure you know the rest). The mistake, although you seem unwilling to accept it, is on your end.
Despite repeated request from the above posters you have failed to provide us with size, weight, from ZIP and to ZIP. Without that information all we can do is guess. And you are looking for facts. So supply them.

@bballwarriormom If you can give more information, someone may be able to explain what the problem is. They would need the zip code to and from, weight and dimensions of the package. The listing number would help as well.
