Ebay automatically accepted a return on a open used waterbed printed the label & need help to void

Okay this is crazy we sell waterbeds.  A customer bought a free flow mattress, liner and heater kit.  Installed the mattress, liner and heater and filled it with water.  A month and 2 days later they start a return request since the mattress is making them sleep worse and isn't like they remember it.  They put changed their mind on item.  eBay automatically accepted the request.  I emailed them twice to let them know they can't get a refund since the the item is used now and probably not in the packages and even if they drain the water the item is clearly used after 30 days.  Customer did not read the emails I guess and emailed me today requesting return information.  I again advised customer they should save the money for return shipping since per ebays policy and ours the brand new items can't be used for 30 days and then drained and returned.  I'm sure they used the conditioner and stuff too that came with the order.  They went ahead and printed a label anyway.  They emailed back tonight and now all they want is their postage back and not do the return after all.  They did not get an email like we get as sellers and since I don't have just a buyer account I can't see where they would be able to void their label and then close the request to return.  I'm going to call ebay on their behalf tomorrow and let them know customer can't void the label and no longer wants to try the return.  If you know the answer to this one please let me know.  Thanks, Bill

It isn't 30 days from purchase, it is 30 days from when they received the item or the latest ETA date on the purchase record.  If they opened a claim in Ebay, then it had to be within 30 days.  Otherwise they'd need to open it in PP.

It sounds to me like you don't have a great deal of problems here.  If this buyer is saying that they had to pay for the return label, then they must have opened the claim as a Buyer's Remorse Claim.  That would be good news for you.

Your restocking fee would still apply since you sold it prior to May 1st.

Since your buyer buyer is saying they had to pay for the return label, that again tells me they filed a buyer's remorse claim.  So since they are saying that as long as they are refunded for the label, they didn't want to return the item, that is great.  If they don't use the label, Ebay will allow the refund back to your buyer.  You DO NOT have to refund the buyer for the postage.  Ebay will.

The buyer just needs to close the Request for Return.  The unused label will be refunded to them buy Ebay.  It may not be as fast as they'd like, but Ebay will refund them.

Oh and automated returns were part of the 2017 Fall Seller Update.  They began in October of 2017.

We also have more changes to the system happening in May 2018.  Your will not be able to apply your restocking fee on sales after May 1st.  And there are a few other changes announced in the 2018 Spring Seller Update.

eBay won’t do anything if you call. The buyer needs to call. But first they need to make sure their PayPal account was charged for the label, eBay doesn’t charge them right away unless that’s changed. The last time I used an eBay return label, my PayPal account was charged like a week later.

The buyer doesn't need to call eBay.

Tell buyer to click the link "Close this return" --

shown under "Mark as shipped" on the Returns page --

the page also says:

"You'll be charged US $XX.XX if you use the label"

meaning you won't be charged (a PayPal Pre-approved payment) --

if you never use the already-printed label.

I thought we could still get our restocking fee if we didn't opt into automatic returns.  I will have to look this one up.  Thank you.

It did show our restocking fee but it was filed on April 30th.  We will have to see on the next one if they take that away too.

NOPE.  That option is gone for all return policies, not just Free Returns.

Streamlined returns policies

Starting in May 2018, we will streamline our returns policy options. Buyers' expectations are continuously evolving and we strive to deliver a returns experience that is consistent and competitive with the changing marketplace. Our simplified return policy options will help drive a retail-standard returns experience for buyers and may boost your sales. We recommend that you begin changing your returns policies now.

The five return policy options will be:

  • No returns accepted
  • 30-day buyer-paid returns
  • 30-day free returns
  • 60-day buyer-paid returns
  • 60-day free returns

Restocking fees will no longer be a return option.

Starting June 1, 2018, when you offer free returns, you’ll have greater control to manage your business, and you can decide to issue partial refunds to buyers.

Certain product categories have unique retail standards and sellers will be able to offer variations on the new returns policy options. Categories that will continue have the option to offer 14-day returns include Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo and Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment.

Sellers will also be able to issue a partial refund for all returns where the item is returned used or damaged in select categories, including Business & Industrial, Parts & Accessories, Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo, Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment, Home Improvement, Furniture, Musical Instruments & Gear, and Yard, Garden & Outdoor.

You will also have the flexibility to set different return policies for domestic and international returns. For example, you can choose to offer free returns domestically, and in the same listing, offer paid returns to international buyers.

Because we are standardizing returns, we will remove the "additional return policy details" field that some sellers may use to detail their returns policies. Removal of the field will simplify returns for buyers.

Well now the buyer must have called eBay and they said to send the used filled up waterbed back.  What a nightmare.  Now I have to figure out what I can do when I get it back here.

You had a choice to make.  It is in the Ebay rules.  If you do not respond to a RFR within 3 days, Ebay can escalate it and refund the buyer out of your money.

From the Ebay rules:

When an item isn't returned to the seller

In some instances, we may not require that an item be returned to the seller. In these situations, we refund the buyer and may seek reimbursement from the seller, for example if:

  • The seller chooses not to accept a return request or provide a return shipping label
  • The item location was misrepresented
  • It's hazardous to ship back the item
  • The item no longer has a value (for instance, a ticket for a cancelled event)

Alternatively, with the buyer's consent, we may give a partial refund to cover differences between how the item was described in the listing and the actual item the buyer received. When given a partial refund, the buyer isn't asked to return the item to the seller. We may require the seller to reimburse eBay for the partial refund.

Here is a link to the entire policy.
