Ebay Shipping - a Total Rip

Ebay charged the buyer the item price plus shipping. Their payout is 15% less including the shipping. Then they overcharge the shipping by 15% then they charge me for the inflated shipping. The shipping label print out says it cost $116 to ship, but they charged me what they charged the buyer $135 ( it was 55lbs). So for an item that sold for $69 they charged $208,  my payout was $175! I end up with $40.00 after I paid $135 in shipping.   Ebay's profit: 42% Boy am I stupid. Really really stupid.

I think that you are misinterpreting some of the information.   eBay charges you the amount of the shipping label, not the amount that the buyer paid.   Your payout should include the amount that the buyer paid, less taxes they paid, less ebay final value fees and less the actual cost of the shipping label.  Depending on the category and whether or not you have a store, ebay fees are usually about 12.9% plus .30.  If you go to the order details of that sale then scroll down, you should see the breakdown.

I would like that to be the case. I was charged $135 from my paypal account for the shipping. I was paid out $175  for the item that sold for $69.00  Really looks like I get $40...

I was selling toys but switch to stamps because of the high price of shipping.

If it had sold to me in Nashville (and assuming you pay 12.9%), you'd have netted about $66... not bad for a $69 starting bid.
I feel as if you have your numbers with this transaction (as it's presented) confused somehow... 🤔

Confusing is one word for it. My payout vs what I paid is pretty cut and dried.

Did you make a mistake when you printed the label. Perhaps the measurements were wrong and that is why the shipping is higher?  The only time that a shipping label came out higher for me was because somehow I added a 1 to the lb. box .  Otherwise, ebay shipping has been very accurate for me.  If the box was long and you forgot to calculate the surcharges on bigger packages that the post office now charges, that is on you, not ebay.   One such surcharge is 15.00 for any box 30" or longer.  You need to factor that into the handling charge or the starting price(unless ebay has updated the site for these 30" or longer items.)   

Go to the auction and see if you can click on how ebay charged their fees.  

Make sure that you accurately weigh and measure your packages before you list them. Pay attention to anything more than a cubic foot. (12"by 12" by 12".)

It does become less profitable on items with "HIGH" shipping costs. That FVF take's a bite.

Not sure how you were charged more for the label than what the label costs. Strange indeed.

Selling something for $69 with $135 shipping is risky business.  Was USPS used for shipping? 

$135 for 55 lbs seems like a lot.

UPS is best for the heavy items.

The buyer paid for the shipping the same as me. $135. It was based on the location, dimensions and weight. USPS. The shipping label was printed and I was charged that. I got an email saying my payout is $175 and the item sold for $69. Something is not transparent.

I am not going to wade thru the math but eBay normally takes like 12.9% of the TOTAL transaction that includes shipping and sales tax, if applicable. Amazon charges me 15% of the total transaction. 

I would not be expecting to make much on a $69 sale with $135 shipping. Here is the layout of the fees.

At $69 eBay took $29. That’s 42%… a far cry from 12. The USPS label said postage was $116, yet 135 was charged to my PayPal. $135 was collected from the buyer as well. So eBay charges 15% on the $135 to me and the buyer? Either way shipping killed it. BTW it was a Mac Pro @55 Lbs!

eBay charges their commission of 12.9% on the $69.00 sales price, $135.00 shipping you received and on any sales tax your buyer paid.

$69.00 cost of item

$135.00 shipping cost the buyer paid you

$15.00 estimated sales tax

$219.00 total paid by buyer

12.9% of $214.00 is $28.55 which is what eBay charged as a commission.

Sounds about right what you were charged. This is why a lot of sellers mark up shipping charges. However, it is risky business to sell lower priced items that are heavy or bulky.
