I dropped off a package in the pull down drop box inside usps. I always do this with my packages and have never had an issue until recently where my last packaged wasn’t scanned. I made a missing mail report with usps and still nothing has been updated. Has this happened to anyone before? Idk what to do and the customer is upset.

I have had many issues with the USPS not scanning packages. Have been dinged for late shipping over it. They many not scan it until it's delivered if then. Is it late or just unscanned?
You can go to the USPS wen site and enter a case there. They are very good at finding missing packages.

I filed a missing claims package but I think I’ll have to file a report next. It’s been a few weeks since it hasn’t been scanned it just keep showing pre-shipment made but the tracking never updated. And now it says missing mail search in place of the tracking.

I never just drop packages in a box. I stand in line to get a scan receipt.

If it's been missing for weeks, you'll need to refund your buyer. You might want to have a face-to-face chat with your postmaster over whether it might have missed the bin when you put it in the drop chute, and whether it might have landed someplace where no one has seen it. (How big a package is it?)
If you have a Self Serve Kiosk in the PO lobby, you can do a Provisional Acceptance scan when dropping off your package, so that the buyer can see on-line that you dropped it off, and eBay will accept that as proof of mailing. Unfortunately that's all you get until someone on the USPS side of the wall scans it, which will then certify that it's in their hands.
They're supposed to scan all packages collected via the drop chute, so that when the container goes out on the next truck, those packages (including yours) will be tracked as being in that container (the source of the "Departed Post Office" tracking entry). If your local PO does not scan those drop-chute packages, there will be no further tracking updates until they reach the origin sort facility (which could be as late as the next day).
From what you describe, it was never scanned when the drop chute bin was emptied, and thus there is no way to determine whether it got lost locally or after it went out on the truck. Best you can hope for is that a local search at your PO will locate it as part of the Missing Mail report you have filed. Good luck.

"made a missing mail report"....one can do that if you have tracking...but if it isn't scanned or have no tracking number showing up yet...wonder how one can do a missing something.
I would assume it had the buyer's address on it so it will get shipped and delivered.
It's been years and I never had an item not received to buyer by USPS.
Haven't had anything lost or missing in years.
A few buyers will take advantage of their item delivered but tracking not showing it 'delivered...so they will ask for a refund as item not received per tracking. I wish we had a 100% of honest buyers but alas we don't.
Good luck.

Do you have another one to send to the buyer? In the future I would stand in line and give it to one of the clerks and ask for receipt. That way they have to scan it in.

It’s just one of one so I’ll have to take the L on it. For smaller items I’ll have to wait in line now. I shipped a bigger package last week via the drop off box and it got delivered no problem.
thanks for the help.

When you drop a package in a drop box, there is an excellent chance that it will not be scanned until it reaches the first sorting center.
If your packaging is not adequately protective, it may be damaged and a scan might never occur. Also if the label is damaged it will not be scanned. If there is a packing slip, it might be returned. If label is damaged, and no packing slip - package is lost.
Sometimes this is a seller caused problem. Only you can tell if you are taking a high level of packaging risk. Your feedback indicates you are a relatively new seller so you may not have yet discovered if you are on the edge of unacceptable packaging.

I’m not a new seller, I know the protocol of how to make sure to ensure this doesn’t happen. Unfortunately it did and that’s why I made this post to get feedback on what other sellers have done in this situation. Thanks ◡̈
