Dropped a UPS package at USPS. What now?

I am totally freaking out here. I had several packages going out this morning and threw everything into one big bag, stopped at the post office and dumped them all in the chute, then ran the rest of my morning errands. I usually check the tracking status of my items in the evening to make sure everything was scanned and when I did that tonight I realized one of them was a UPS package. I don't ship USPS ground anymore because they've destroyed a couple of ground shipments so every now and then I have a UPS shipment but not often which is why I spaced it this time.

Should I hit the post office first thing in the morning to see if it's still there? I searched Google and lots of folks say this happens a lot and USPS will generally hand the packages to UPS and there's no way to call individual post offices these days so it's not like I can pick up the phone and call tomorrow morning. I searched the tracking number and UPS hasn't scanned it so it seems my post office might still have it. Does anyone else have experience with this happening?

I did send a message to my buyer and let her know what's going on in case there's a delay in her receiving the item. Ugh!

I've used the pickup service from usps a couple of times but we live on a route where our mail carrier changes daily and some of them aren't very reliable. One carrier completely ignored the small pile of packages I'd scheduled a pickup for and I had to holler at him as he headed to our neighbor's house (thankfully, he hadn't left yet) and played dumb when I asked why he left the packages. The other time the carrier picked them up but the packages weren't scanned into the system until the next day. I guess my point is, I don't trust them.

I see. Thanks for the info.

Well, I wanted to edit my original post but can't do that so I'm updating it here. I called the post office 4 times this morning and got the 'pick up, hang up' action the first time then no answer the other 3 times

Yeah, I'm not surprised, unfortunately. 🙄

So I'll be refunding my buyer the shipping she paid and if the package isn't in the UPS system by Monday, the 29th I'll refund her for the item too. Then I'll have to cross my fingers I don't get negative feedback.

Really, I wouldn't beat yourself up too much over this, and I would not go volunteering refunds at this point, either, as you will only be drawing attention to a Shipping misfire that your buyer might otherwise have not noticed at all. I don't think you're necessarily adding more than a couple of days to the package travel time. The mistake you made in dropping off a package with the wrong carrier happens every day; they have a standard routine for dealing with packages landing in the wrong place.

Some years back when renting DVDs was a thing, from Blockbuster, Family Video or elsewhere, I had a freak-out moment when I realized that I had dropped off a DVD at the wrong store in town. It was too close to closing time to get back to retrieve it, so I phoned them up, but they said No Worries, they have an informal agreement with the other stores in town to just drop off misdirected DVDs whenever a customer hands one in at the wrong place. Apparently I am not the only easily-confused old fart in town.

The package still has not surfaced. I'm glad I followed my intuition and refunded the buyer the shipping and then, the remainder of the funds they paid. The package was dropped at USPS last Wednesday morning and still hasn't been given to UPS.  The package was scheduled to reach the buyer by tomorrow and since it's not even in UPS's hands now, there's no way they'd have it delivered on time (tomorrow), which would have affected my perfect on-time shipping score. Fortunately, the item only cost me $6.00 at an auction so it's not a big loss on my end. The shipping cost was double that amount and I may file for a refund of that if the package hasn't turned up in the system in 30 days. My guess is my package will end up with so many others at the USPS auctions (govdeals.com) and they'll profit from my mistake.

According to the Help page about voiding labels, "UPS labels can't be voided as you won't be charged until the package has been delivered":

Funny, eBay already took the funds for the shipping but I guess they don't pay UPS until the label gets scanned into their system?

Again, there aren't phone numbers for the individual post offices (there's only an 800 number for all of them) so calling isn't an option. I just wondered if this has happened to anyone else and how they handled it or what happened.

I'm not sure what you mean. I call the post office is my town all the time

Re: Dropped a UPS package at USPS. What now?

Hello, I did the same exact mistake earlier this week. Can I ask what happened in your case? Did the UPS package end up being delivered to the buyer in time, or did it get lost for good?
