Don’t use USPS self service Kiosks for drop offs

This is more of a warning for other sellers. Our local post office just got a self service kiosk installed that can be used for package drop offs. I didn’t know it was there until a post office worker told me to use it while I was in line to get packages scanned in. I’ve used it a few times since then finding it very convenient. Today I read the little disclaimer you have to acknowledge on screen and it said that scanning in a package at the kiosk IS NOT an acknowledgment that USPS has received the package. For anything other than priority mail I guess this is ok since those packages aren’t guaranteed but if there is ever a situation where you used the kiosk to scan in a priority mail package and it dropped off the face of the earth with no other scans, USPS is for sure going to decline to honor the insurance included with priority mail and tell you that they never officially received the package. Probably best that EBay sellers avoid these kiosks since it goes against the point of making sure a package gets an acceptance scan. If USPS wants these kiosks to take load off of staff they shouldn’t give frequent customers a reason to not use it.

I've used them ever since our Post Office installed one and never had a problem. Some of the postal employees would refuse to scan packages presented at the counter anyway so instead of wasting my lunch hour standing in line I use the APC and drop the package in the cart right next to the counter.  The APC cannot be used for signature required packages, though. They must still be presented at the counter.

I haven’t had a problem yet either but I’m not going to continue opening myself up to having a problem. Just because I haven’t shot myself in the foot yet doesn’t mean I should continue trying… lol.

You are correct. Using the SSK is the equivalent of using a scan sheet. It's enough to satisfy eBay's on-time shipping requirements, but it is not acknowledgement by USPS that they have taken physical possession of the package. Insurance claims will be denied if the SSK is the only scan.

It would be too easy for people to scan packages and not put them in the drop off bin, then file claims and scam the system. This is why USPS doesn't consider it an official acceptance scan.

Walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm.

They seem to work most of the time. The rub is, your insurance does not kick in until it's scanned so if goes missing before that, tough.

That's true, though eBay accepts that provisional scan as proof of Acceptance, meaning that you are able to show that you shipped within your Handling time, even if no one empties the bin until the next day.

Beyond that point, I would say the odds of the package mysteriously disappearing before another scan are the same as if it was handed over the counter with a full Acceptance scan (i.e. it goes into the possession of the same post office either way), so I'm not worried about that possibility at all. I still favor getting the Acceptance scan at the front counter whenever they're open because it goes right into the mailstream at that point, whereas the bin may not get emptied before the mid-day truck goes out.

I just wanted to add to this thread. My USPS is constantly at least 30 people deep in line with the SLOWEST moving workers I’ve ever seen. I am on my lunch break and rushed for time so I used the SSK (as I have for years with no issue). I scanned my package and put it in the drop box. 4 days later the USPS tracking system still says they are awaiting my item. It’s a $400 item shipped via Priority shipping with the label purchased/printed from EBay.  I had to file a missing package report yesterday. They did confirm they have cameras on the drop box so if it is truly missing they should be able to see on camera that it was dropped off. My only concern now is; will the almost $400 be covered if the item is never found. Sucks! Before this, I’ve never had an issue and I’ve used SSK for many years.
