Hey guys! Haven't had a return in awhile that I had to pay for, and I noticed something odd when I accepted the return. I was charged a little over $5 for first class mail at 4oz. Wasn't sure what to think of it at first, but when I had to go to the local post office to pick it up, I deduced Signature confirmation had been added to the package. The package was not origianlly sent with Sig Confirmation, so I'm not really sure why it got added on, and more importantly why I had to pay for it. Is this something new? or something I just haven't encountered yet?

I'd be happy to pay for return sig confirmation on an item of that value. That is a protection for you, as a seller.
Not really... Delivery confirmation on a return would be protection for the buyer not the seller. And that's not even the point. The point is eBay just added it without my knowledge, and I got charged for it.
No it’s protection for the seller not the buyer. Since a return service label you the seller are responsible if the package is lost or damaged. The buyer will still get a refund since they didn’t pay for return shipping.

@jklfindingswrote:A new Pilot Program. Apparently signature confirmation on returns is the next step we will be seeing as eBay does it's best to keep up with other ecommerce sites.
It would be nice if they would let us know when they decide to screw us with a new program.
Surely they won't do it for all returns, hope not anyway.

No one is forced to purchase a return label through eBay. You are offered to purchase one and if you don't like it, buy it somewhere else and upload it yourself.
I mean, we are talking about an extra $2 on a return label for a $245 return. Who would care?

Jen - Can you show me where you got that info? Everything in ebay policies says that it is the buyers responsibility to get the package back to the seller with a return. No mention of "it depends on who bought the label".

I know we don't have to use Ebay's return labels.
Are they going to do that with all returns, or start at a certain dollar amount?
I can see it with a $245 item, but not a $25 item.

Imagine this being added in with free returns too. But beyond that shouldn't we have the option, and not be forced? Don't need signature confirmation until $750 to send a package out, but if it comes back, we have to shell out extra for a low dollar item, doesn't make sense.

I'm guessing Jen saw it the same place I did- I actually started a thread about this topic a while back where I had a package being returned from Canada that was lost in the mail on it's way back. I was told by ebay that even though there was no delivery confirmation of the item being returned to me that I would still be forced to refund the buyer. An ebay employee chimed in on the discussion and basically said that ebay hold the person (whether the buyer or the seller) that physically buys the label responsible in the event of a missing package since they theoretically could have added on insurance if they wanted to . In my case I wasn't held responsible because I didn't buy the label - I only gave the buyer the $ to buy it themselves.
While you are technically correct that SC wasn't necesssary, I am guessing ebay only added it onto your package as an extra layer of protection for you as the seller.....just think of how much of a bummer it would be if the postman tossed that package on your front steps and it was stolen. I seem to remember another poster a while back saying they also got SC added on to their package as well - I don't know how ebay decides the threshold to add it, but I've never had a return that included it. Don't think I've had a return quite that high either.

Yes that thread is where I got the information. I forgot you were the OP of that thread! Straight from the blues, the buyer is not responsible for loss or damage when the seller pays for return shipping.
