I just had a customer to purchase two of my larger pieces of art. They paid right away and then sent me a message through Ebay saying they would be out of town until the 13th and asked if I would hold off shipping until the 14th and if I could ship with tracking and signature required because they had a new postman and sometimes mail was getting delivered to the wrong address. I checked his feedback and he's purchased from several different artists over the past 12 months and has given them all good feedback.
My concern is how do I keep from getting a "shipped late" ding from Ebay or am I just going to have to accept getting one? I'm set up for 1 day shipping.

UPDATE and HAPPY ENDING! The customer messaged me today that he had just returned from his trip and wanted to purchase the two art pieces again. He's paid again and they are ready to take to the post office first thing in the morning. 😁

No, its not an automatic "ding" as others have posted. The buyer would have to specifically mark it as "late". Its perfectly fine to hold back a shipment upon the request of a buyer and the eBay reps have frequently posted that here.

Great, he agreed to a cancellation. Let him know that signature confirmation is X dollars more and when you restart the ads , you will add that cost to the starting price . Figure out when he will be back and decide what time you can list so that he can get online and buy it. Goodluck.

If the item is not shipped within the handling time and it does not arrive before the estimated delivery date the seller receives a late 'ding' regardless of when the label was printed.

It works that way only if there is no tracking uploaded. If there is no tracking a late ding is only given if the buyer says that it was late when they give feedback. But when there is tracking the seller can get a late ding if the item is not shipped within their handling time AND it does not arrive before the estimated delivery date. If it is shipped late and arrives before the eta, then it is considered as being on time.

"...when there is tracking the seller can get a late ding if the item is not shipped within their handling time AND it does not arrive before the estimated delivery date"
And thus the point of me mentioning the "no automatic ding" rule in my suggestion to the OP to not worry about using tracking....

Unfortunately, I have run into issues in the past when I tried that and my post office would not accept the package due to the date being 3 or 4 days old. They said the package has to be mailed on the date the label states.

For anyone that comes across this thread - DO NOT hold packages even though the buyer asks; you will get a defect and eBay won’t remove it. I talked to multiple CS, and the first two couldn’t even locate where the late shipment defect was. The last one finally found it but told me they have no way of removing those. When I said “so then if a buyer asks to hold a package, tell them I can’t? Doesn’t seem like good business” she stated “no, you can hold onto it, if that’s what your business wants to do”…
…is it eBay? Is it my business? Can I do what my business needs to do to make customers happy? Then doesn’t it make sense to NOT COUNT THE LATE SHIPMENT AGAINST MY ACCOUNT?!?
There is plenty of misinformed websites saying “just call ebay and they’ll remove it!” But they won’t “unless it affects your seller status”.
