Conflicting Return Information

Hi all, I recently received an item (a box of trading cards) from a seller who had a free 30-day return policy. Not to get into too much detail, but I was on the edge of filing a Not As Described claim to start the refund, since there were some suggestions made in the description that weren't exactly lived up to (but hard to say for sure if were intentional), and there was a little bit of damage sustained that I wasn't sure if it happened before or during shipment.

I was reaching closing time for the post office, so I just put "I didn't like it " as the reason, started the return, printed the label, and dropped it off at the PO.

Considering I paid for priority at checkout when I first bought the item, and the seller prints a label for a $30 cheaper service, without telling me of the change, I had some concerns about the seller right after the purchase.

Anyways, I packed the item using all the materials the seller used, (with some extra tape since his box came apart a little bit), and it's on it's way back. When I was looking at the description again, I noticed buried in the fine print, a line from the seller saying he won't accept returns on this item, even though the info at top next to the pics clearly stated free returns. I'm a bit concerned about the honesty of the seller, so is there anything I can do to protect myself if he tries to claim I'm one of those people who sent him back kitty litter or those horror stories you used to (or still do) read about?

Maybe it's paranoid, but I have a feeling this seller knew he was overselling what he had and I don't want to get taken advantage of, being new at returns. Now that the label is printed and the cards are headed back, am I "safe?"

Re: Conflicting Return Information

If they have free returns it doesn’t matter what they say in the description they have to accept returns.   They do not have to refund original shipping.   And with free shipping if it’s sent back in a different condition eBay allows them to deduct up to 50% from the refund.
