I sold an item to a buyer recently and they had decided to initiate a return on it. I got the item back and it is exactly how I sent it out so now I want to issue the refund. The problem is, as soon as the return was initiated on their end it said that eBay had accepted the return request automatically and the money from the sale had been taken from my paypal account. Now eBay keeps sending me notifications to refund the buyer and every time I try to issue a refund it gives me this error saying that a technical error has occurred. What do I do? I’ve tried calling paypal and eBay and nothing has helped this far. If anyone has any ideas that would be great. Thanks!

Try @babers1red-5 to refund from a laptop instead, or try another browser. If you don't refund before the end (yes before the end) of 2 business days, eBay will automatically force a refund, or the buyer can ask eBay to step in, which is bad.

Ok. I tried doing this on my computer and this message came up:
Any ideas on what to do from here? This is what was happening when I tried sending the refund earlier. The paypal transaction didn't have the option to refund the buyer either, it just says that their payment is pending in my paypal account.

So do your funds have to clear first? before the refund can complete.

Sometimes refunds through Paypal can take a few days to process. If Paypal shows the refund is pending, you're alright.
You can call ebay and let customer service know of the issue. Once the pending refund clears your Paypal - it should close it out. Just keep an eye on it.

Ok, thank you all. The funds in paypal are being held so I can’t actually do anything with them, but hopefully it all gets sorted. When PayPal took the funds out of my account the balance was negative, but I added the amount I needed so my current balance is just $0.

So apparently, after calling eBay for the 5th time and getting answers, they told me that I would have to put in the amount of money for the sale into my account and send that to the buyer inside of PayPal. The only problem is, it was a pretty big sale and I don't have that much money inside of my bank account. All of the funds from the sale are inside of my PayPal still, but they are just being held so I can't access them. Not really sure what to do from here because I can't get access to that much money before the return period is over. Any ideas would be helpful, but I think I lost this one.

If you send your buyer the equivalent amount of the refund directly inside of PayPal, your buyer will get a second refund when eBay AUTOMATICALLY releases your held funds at the end of the 2 business days to close the return.
Hopefully, that's not how you want it to happen. Sounds like eBay CS needs some coaching.
