A customer claimed that a product I had sold her had been previously opened (which I knew to be untrue). So I paid for a return shipping label for her to return the item to me. I never heard from her after that, and she did not return the item either. Ebay has closed the case since. What the heck? The money I made from selling that item (it was cheap) basically just went towards that return label, and I never got it back. Is there any way to undo that?
Edit: I sold her a mascara that was still in its packaging and knew it was sealed, there was no way it had been opened before. I've heard of people trying to get refunds by claiming the product was damaged or something, and I assumed this customer was trying to do the same thing, which is why I opted for a return, and was going to refund her after the fact. I didn't want to give her a refund, and have her keep the product.

If the buyer does not use the label, you are not charged for it.

You are, actually. I just had the same problem: buyer has opened a return request, but hasn't shipped the item on time, so the shipping label expired. I checked it on PayPal and I was charged for it. The case was closed, because ebay noticed buyer didn't do anything (any movement according to the provided label).

I just went through the same situation. I was trying to find the way to void that unused label, but I couldn't find where I could do it. I was trying to submit a request in PayPal, but it didn't work, because the payment was made towards ebay, not USPS directly. I find this situation "interesting".
What's more interesting: the buyer recently emailed me asking for a new shipping label so he could send my item back. I asked him what happend to the old one, and there is silence since then.

It depends on how you provided the label.
I always have a buyer open a return through ebay where I agree to pay the shipping. That way, if they never actually print and use the label, I'm not charged anything.

If you chose to provide your own return label then it’s most likely too late to void it & get a refund. You had 48-120 hours to void it if you purchased it through PayPal or eBay. If you chose to have eBay send the label then you haven’t paid for it yet and you won’t be charged for it unless the buyer uses it.

If they print the label, but don't use it, is the seller still charged?

No. The seller is only charged if the label is actually used.
