So I'm not a big seller or anything on eBay; I just use it for occasional things I don't want, so this is my first return request. I sold a new electronic device recently with no returns accepted. Now the seller is saying that it worked for a few weeks, but is now having issues where it keeps resetting. They at first asked me directly if I can replace it, but before I even saw the message they opened a return request instead. I'm also a bit concerned about return scams, since the seller didn't even originally pay for the item until I opened an unpaid item case. I can't replace it anyway because I'm not a store; I just won the item in a contest but decided I didn't want it without opening it.
I know eBay just about always sides with the buyer, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any way I could deny the return before accepting it. eBay's policy states that you can only return items for a "No returns accepted" seller if the item did not arrive as described. My item did arrive as describe and I received positive feedback; it only stopped working later, albeit still in the defective return window. If I can't reject the return, can I just issue a partial refund without the item being sent back, since it is now used?
Also, if I do accept the return, can I open up a case if it is missing any parts or the packaging? eBay's policy also states all parts of the item need to be returned, including the packaging.
I'm not really worried about ending up with negative feedback or anything; eBay and now PayPal screw over sellers so much I'm probably not even going to be selling on here again. My concern is if eBay decides to issue the refund on my behalf and takes the money from my account, without the seller returning the item.
So I guess I'm just looking for advice on how I should handle this and if there is any chance I can reject the return or open a case later that would be decided in my favor. And before that, should I ask for pictures to make sure the item hasn't been damaged? Can I offer to help troubleshoot it? I'm fairly good with electronics, so might be able to help them fix it.
Thank you!

If buyer opened an INAD claiming the item is defective, you can deny the return, but that doesn't mean you won't be giving a refund. Ebay would probably refund buyer from your Pay Pal account and let them keep the item.
It's best to accept the return, provide return shipping and refund once the item is returned.
Once the refund is given, then you can appeal the case if you want. Probably wont change anything, but you might get the return shipping charge back
