What a crock of **bleep**. The buyer requested I relist this item. I relisted it. It was in perfect condition. I quoted them 18.90 to ship and actually sucked up another $10 of my own profit to mail it because it would not fit in a large flat rate.
Once the package arrived, the post office damaged it. There was no insurance requested by the buyer. Now they are throwing ebay policy at me stating I am responsible for all of it??
Is ebay out of their freeking minds? How am I supposed to suck that up?
This is so wrong on so many levels. Even if I have stated "buyer pays for return shipping", it means nothing. If the buyer doesn't request and or pay for insurance, it means nothing. Why pay for any insurance at the post office?
While the seller sucks it up, the buyer has no, zero, nada responsibility in this whole scheme. I just think that is plain WRONG.

Put yourself in the buyer's shoes. Would you want to suck up a damaged item?
As a seller, it is your responsibility to get the item to the buyer in as described condition. That means you take all the risks of the carrier losing or damaging the item. Had you bought insurance or shipped Priority Mail, you would have had insurance coverage. If not, you owe the buyer a full refund including return shipping if you want the item back. It is not wrong; it is how it is.

you should take the time and read ebays rules.
yes, you are responsible. and you even get to pay to get the item returned.
insurance is for the seller, not the buyer.
if you shipped priority, there is insurance.

No ebay isn't out of their minds. Its your responsibility to pack the item adequately and get it to the buyer safely. The buyer is absolutely right, you ARE responsible. You packed the item and you contracted with USPS to have it delivered.
The buyer does not need to request insurance. Insurance is for your protection. if you shipped priority mail, then your package has $50 automatic insurance. The buyer is covered by the ebay money back guarantee and paypal buyer protection, which means they get a refund from you whether there was insurance or not. That is why the insurance is your protection. If the item gets damaged during shipping, you refund the buyer and then file the insurance claim.
Its not plain wrong. The buyer has insurance through the MBG and paypal. That is why they don't need to ask you for shipping insurance. Its your responsibility to ship with insurance or self-insure your packages if you don't want to take a total loss.

TRS and a certain level of PowerSellers receive Commercial Plus pricing which includes up to $100 insurance for Priority Mail. All other sellers receive Commercial Base pricing which includes up to $50 insurance for Priority Mail.
Actually all Priority shipments, regardless of where purchased, receive a minimum of up to $50 insurance.

Why can't you take responsibility for this. You chose the way it was shipped and packed. Obviously you did not pack it well enough or it would not have arrived in pieces.
Refund the buyer in full and pack better next time.

Yes, you are required to refund the buyer in full. The fact that it cost you an additional ten dollars to ship to them is also not their fault. It is your responsibility to determine shipping at the time of listing.

Well said!
The buyer didn't do anything wrong and the seller has to realize that it is the price of doing business, even if the carrier messes up.

@rockcrafter
You are responsible for getting the item to the buyer in the condition you stated in the listing.
Buying insurance is up to the seller, it covers the seller, buyer has Ebay's MBG to cover them if they don't get the item they purchased.

Ebay labels come with $50 insurance. If you are TRS or power seller, then there is $100 insurance 🙂

Priority mail flat rate includes up to $50 insurance. If the PO damaged it, file a claim to get reimbursed.
