So to make a long story short, I got a return request for a defective item, approved it pending return, ebay closed the request because they showed they didn't send it in time. I received it today, the cutoff date was yesterday so it had to be sent before yesterday. I haven't got home yet but the item is bashed and rattling around in the box they shipped it in. Not really sure what step I should take overall, they used the label I purchased through ebay and everything.

Well, dang it. Since you are a TRS, if you had 30-Day Returns (or better), you'd be able to deduct up to 50% for a de-valued return. Since that is not your Return policy, I don't see how you can short the refund. I understand the 'slippery slope', since eBay closed the Return... but I also understand that the case closed in your favor. Were it me, I'd sit back and see if your buyer questions the case closure, and move from there. Good luck.

I would inspect the item 1st and then refund accordingly.
Question for anyone: Does eBay refund FVF's after a return case is closed and then you do some sort of refund?

I think that is what I am going to do. I'm going to inspect the item first tonight because it's also kind of adds confusion on top if they shipped it inadequately and damaged the item.

To make things even more confusing. This never got scanned at a singled usps until it got to my location. So strange.

It looks like they will give me my fees back if I process a refund now.

Yes, they do.

May be the thing to do.
Have read of eBay flip flopping in these instances. (buyer could appeal)
Then there is the possibility of a CC dispute being initiated. (the eBay seller coverage varies)
Sometimes better to take your lumps when they are small rather than pressing one's luck thinking all is golden.

you need to open the package and do the right thing
you accepted a return and it was shipped back to you
maybe it was late but thats no reason to avoid returning the money
its not OK to get over on a buyer because of a technicality
you need to do the right thing and refund.
I have had many opportunities to rip off a buyer but I could not live with myself if I did that

I don't understand what you mean by the 'cutoff day was yesterday'. Isn't the cutoff day usually the day it needs to be shipped out by?
Regardless, you have the item back so you should refund. If you can't refund through the case you can use the 'send refund' option.
