Buyer Fraud???

I sold some half dollars to a buyer on eBay.  Shipped USPS priority with insurance.  The package was shipped on July 27.  eBay tracking shows it didn’t go out for delivery until Aug 8 at 6:10 AM. At 12:05 it says, “visible damage”.  At 4:00 it says “no authorized recipient available”. August 10 at 4:06 pm it says “package research case created”.  And last it says August 10 at 10:44 AM (which was before the research case was created)  “delivered to agent for final delivery.
I filed a claim with USPS based on the buyer saying the box was empty when he got it.  I think it’s unlikely.  It was taped up pretty well.  Someone would have to go to a lot of work to open it.
USPS called me today and said their tracking shows NO DAMAGE and the box was delivered intact. The representative told me she believes the buyer is scamming me. Why would eBays tracking not be the same as USPS tracking notes????   Has anyone experienced anything like this before????  She said the buyer shouldn’t have signed for the box if it was empty.   I opened a case with eBay and told them that USPS says the box was unopened and intact and what she said about claiming the buyer is scamming me.
Please help!   I don’t know what to do.

It could be that the buyer is pretty slick and called ebay support and told them the package arrived damaged, and then ebay marked it as such.  And if that is the case, it is scary for every seller on this site!

I do not think that can be done.. Did you enter the number on the USPS site???

Re: Buyer Fraud???

Hi bo - Two opinions of mine - One - Some of your items may be too expensive to sell on ebay, or "scammers paradise" as I will now call it.    Two -  Some postal  workers also steal.  However, you already know these things. Just a little positive reinforcement.

USPS locally here is the one that told me once I receive my insurance claim letter I would need to bring the box in to them.   Is that wrong???

Not wrong just not enough information.

Once  the claim you have the purchaser take it to their PO.

Reshipped back to you violates the insurance agreement.

Re: Buyer Fraud???

OK, I'm not saying you're wrong, but then how does he get differing package details about damage?  The buyer can't change it themselves, correct?

Re: Buyer Fraud???

So the purchaser has to take it to their PO????    My local PO helped me fill out the claim and told me to bring the box in as evidence once I receive Insurance Claim letter.   I'm not really sure what I'm doing.  Ive never had to file a claim before.

Re: Buyer Fraud???

That’s what I don’t understand.  Why would eBays tracking details be different from USPS tracking details????

Re: Buyer Fraud???

"Has anyone experienced anything like this before????"

Yes,  hundred of cases of buyer fraud on here and other sites every day for coins, cell phones, computers, high end cameras, jewelry, expensive clothing, watches and especially game systems.  Seller beware.

I had a potential scammer write me for a discount on some Gucci watches last month.  I shut them down as quick as I could and ended the listings.  Zero feedback and using a brand new account was the tip off.

As far as your case you have to realize that there are dozens of dishonest postal employees taking packages home and messing with them.  Some have ben caught with over 10,000 pieces of mail in their homes.

The best advice being repeated here by numerous advanced sellers is never list something you can't afford to lose, donate or put in the trash because there is almost zero seller protection when it comes to on-line sales fraud.

When I first started selling on ebay in 2011 I sold over 20,000 coins.  Gold, silver, Civil War era copper.  I never had any issues with buyers.  Recently as the precious metal prices increased again I stopped listing expensive coins. It is not worth the risk when you can go to a local coin shop and get cash in hand no questions asked.

Re: Buyer Fraud???

I hear that! I can’t believe that there is that much dishonesty and scamming going on but I know there is. I’m just hoping that the insurance that I paid for will cover it.

Re: Buyer Fraud???

I personally have rec'd empty package when ordering "small items" on EBAY (postal sorting machines are brutal on packages).     USPS delivered "empty package" (and didn't make any notations about package being ripped open).    Sometimes USPS does NOT take responsibility for their mistakes.

That’s probably bad news for me.

Re: Buyer Fraud???

You paid for insurance coverage for your item from your drop off with USPS to the point of delivery.   It does not cover the return trip to you.   I would be surprised if the PO tells you that you are out of luck being that it has been shipped again.

Re: Buyer Fraud???

They told me they would want the box for evidence.  What would have been the best thing to do in a case like this?
