Beware USPS overcharges - cost adjustments

Wow, got to love the USPS.  Not.

Shipped an total weight of 6.2 oz bubble mailer on Feb 8.

Inside was 1 package of 3 mini bath bombs weighing 5.1 oz.  I rounded the weight up to 7 oz and printed a label for that amount.  I ship these products regularly and always weigh every single package before I create a shipping label.

Today I received notice through eBay that the USPS claims the package weighed 1 lb 1 oz and I was being charged an additional $4.87 for priority mail.

WTH!  I know the USPS is in financial distress but this is theft.  Anybody else find themselves blatantly overcharged?

Lot of good it will do but I am calling the USPS dispute line first thing Monday.

Yes, that allegedly one ounce mistake is a bad one and it’s happened to me.
The cost of shipping is killing my profit margin. Even first class mail seems ridiculously higher than it should be.
I know there were increases this year, but this is crazy. First class almost the same price as priority mail. Ouch!!

That seems like a big discrepancy. Did you weigh the empty bubble mailer? I sometimes take photos of packages on the scale and allow for a few ounces difference, but it has happened to me on a few that I didn't photograph. Not even sure that helps though

I weighed the complete package - product inside the bubble mailer.  My shipping label weighs 0.03 oz.  The total package weight was 6.2 oz.

I paid for a 7 oz package.  With the zone rates the USPS charges these days the cost is the same for 6 oz to 8 oz packages.

How the USPS came up with 1 lb 1 oz is unbelievable.  The package did not weigh quite 7 oz let alone over a pound.

Makes me very mad.  I'm one of those sellers who always rounds up on postage weight and ships coloring books, activity books and puzzle books via first class postage as USPS requires.  I don't cheat by using Media mail as so many sellers do.

Thanks for your comments.

The sorting machinery occasionally weighs two small items together.  Apparently if you appeal, there is an image that USPS can look at to determine whether this was the source of the weight error.

Thanks so much!

I called the USPS dispute center and they are looking into it.

Have to wait up to 15 days to hear back.

Keeping my fingers crossed.
