How can eBay protect a seller from being a lending library? The managed "auto return" policy means a buyer can order my product -- in our case a rare and collectible 12-inch laser disc -- make a digital copy of it, and return the item with no cost to himself. Meanwhile, every trip the vulnerable item makes through the mail adds wear-and-tear to the original condition. Even if it arrives intact, it's value diminishes. The policy also negatively impacts sellers of one-of-a-kind items that can be scanned, like old photos, theater ephemera, posters, postcards, magazines, etc. If eBay cannot set up exemptions to the return policy for these archival items, it is going to drive all of its rare paper and used media sellers like us to no longer offer eBay browsers our valuable collectibles. OInce again eBay is harming its own brand and chasing sellers away.
