What do you do when a buyer states an item is not as listed when it truly was but Ebay automatically accepts their return with that information out there. Does this affect my seller status?

Well, you should have accepted the return before eBay had to get involved. You'll have to refund and will take a metrics ding. Too many of those will affect your seller status mightily. Good luck!

Was the return automatically accepted when the buyer filed the case or was it after you tried to fight it? If it was automatically accepted when the buyer filed the case, you might have your settings set to automatically accept returns. If this is not what you want to do, then you need to change your account settings.

Change your account settings so that you do not automatically accept returns, this way you get the opportunity to try to work it out with the buyer. It is still not wise to fight a return if the buyer insists though, because as MT mentioned, you will likely lose and get a defect on your account as a bonus.

any person who has an issue should have to open a case and let the communication between buyer & seller start and be documented.
As a seller, I have to wait four days to file a non-payment claim on a buyer and then wait another 4 days (if they don't pay) before I can request my FVF back and close case.

I received an item that was not as listed in listing yesterday.
this morning I clicked on resolve an issue. Now I tried this in two scenarios. I selected "not as described / did not match and request a refund. In the past, this would open a case for discussion between buyer and seller.
When I typed in my issues and attached photos, I was left with the only option to click on "request return" and there was a statement below the tab that gave me the impression a return label was going to be printed.
I backed out and just sent the seller an e-mail with question for now. I rather they have an option to choose how they want to resolve the issue.
It's only a $7.00 item, but I don't think the seller would like to get hit say for $5.00 to have me send it back.
I can't believe some of excuses a buyer has to choose from for a reason to request return! Changed my mind, found a better price, ordered by mistake, just didn't like it.

Those are buyer's remorse reasons. If the seller has a No Returns policy, and the buyer selects one of those reasons, the seller can decline the return. If the seller has 14, 30 or 60 day returns, then the seller accepts for any reason.

I guess my buyers are smarter than that. I have a " no return " policy. They just click " INAD " and doesn't matter what your return policy is, Period. I have yet to see any new programs that weren't a complete mess when started by Ebay, nor did it provide any benefit to most sellers.
