Anyone else having problems with extra shipping costs being charged after item delivered?

I sell mainly books, and I have been an ebayer for about 20 years.  There have been 6 instances in the last month that I have incurred "chargebacks" for additional shipping costs via my Managed Payments account.  This doesn't make any sense as I weigh items prior to generating a shipping label and then I take the item to the post office window who also weighs the item.  More importantly, all of the items have been shipped "Media Mail" and all have been books.  For example, today I received a chargeback of $3.36 on two paperback books that I recently sent out and had already paid for a label for a two pound package ($3.45).  For those of you that aren't aware of the Media Mail rates, the first pound is $2.89 and then it's roughly $.50 for each pound thereafter.  So the chargeback of $3.36 means that the post office is saying that the package of two paperback books actually weighed about 6 pounds more than I originally paid for, which makes no sense for two paperback books and it's flat out wrong.  It seems that the day that my items are received by the buyer, I have received these chargebacks.  I have called ebay twice and both times they say that the chargebacks are from the post office and ebay can't explain them.   I have sold about 50 items in the last month and the chargebacks have occurred 6 times, so it's not every item.  So far my chargebacks total about $14, not a ton of money, but I have no idea when it will stop and it seems fraudulent to me and how do I know that tomorrow my chargeback won't be $100?  My managed payments account is like a bank account, and I am very uneasy about chargebacks, even small dollar amounts like these, that ebay can't explain and that I know for a fact are without merit.  Anyone else getting these charges?  In 20 years of selling, I've never had any chargebacks.

It may be that the items measured differently, and you where charged a dimensional weight factor, which would be a higher fee. eBay, wont say what the extra amount is for.

call the PO and have your tracking numbers. See if the PO, who is doing the charges can explain why?

And there seems to be no way to challenge a charge on MPs. If it was your CC you could dispute it but how do you dispute a MP charge?

Thanks, but I've spoken to the post office and they can't explain it either.  They say that they aren't doing the chargebacks.  I think that it's ebay and they are blaming the post office.  But I don't have any recourse other than to stop selling and remove my account.

Right, my point exactly.  I'm left without any options, other than to stop selling and to remove my account.

Thanks, but that wouldn't be it, none of these items were bigger than a trade size paperback, and I would have shipped in either a bubble envelope or a small box.  And when I took the item to the post office window they would have caught it if the item was oversized or weighed more than my label states that it should, in theory.

USPS doesn't have a dimensional weight for Media Mail. Any package that's within the allowed maximum dimensions is just charged by its actual weight.

These charges aren't from your local PO or directly from eBay. They're from the APV system which operates at sorting centers.

The total charged ($3.45 + $3.36 = $6.81) is the exact postage cost to ship 8 pounds via MM.  But I have no idea why they thought your packages were so heavy.

With respect, eBay is a ten billion dollar company. Why would they be charging you an additional $3 for no reason. Not one other person has replied that this is happening to them. I'm on this forum every day and I've not seen another post from anyone saying the same thing. By your own words this has only happened 6 times out of 50 sales, so most likely this is related to Media Mail and something is amiss there. I'm only pointing this out because you seem to want to resolve this and if you are looking in the wrong direction then the answer will be missed. Best of luck to you....

Do you always go to the same Post Office to deliver your goods?  I go to multiple locations, not just one all the time.  Do you drop them off, rather than getting them weighed at the desk so that you receive a receipt afterward?  Get them weighed right at the post office so that you have a receipt of weight.  Don't trust them with anything dropped off-----we pay them enough and they rip us all off (raising rates profoundly resulting in loosing billions, that doesn't work)

It is entirely possible that the package in question was sitting on top of another package when the bar code was scanned by the APV system.

@5star-books

It's neither the Post Office of origin nor the eBay label system doing the charges / billing.  And it's not a "chargeback" it's an UP-charge.

All the accepting office should be doing is scanning acceptance, and sending the item on.

They spent the big money to upgrade things so that size/weight/class discrepancies are detected along the way rather than expending time at the local level.

At one time there was a procedure in place to challenge such charges.

Is that gone?

I have only received credits, but seem that they offered to allow me to challenge that refund with the notification that I got..

You seem to be misunderstanding what a chargeback is, but anyways the majority of my sales are books and I ship those 99+% of the time via medial mail and have never seen extra charges show up later on for them.  I always make sure to get a receipt with the weights when I bring packages to the post office.  A handful of times I've caught the scale being extremely off (reading the package as much heavier than it actually was) and the clerk had to recalibrate it.

My guess, presuming you're not lying about anything, your packages have been hitting a scale or some such that isn't calibrated properly.
