Am I protected from defects if USPS loses a package?

Usually eBay removes and defects if the delivery is late on a package as long as they see that I dropped off the package at the post office within my handling time. However, I've had a few customers within the past few months that never got their package. Basically, their local USPS office scans the package as "Out for delivery" and then the next status says "Awaiting delivery scan" which stays like that. After talking to USPS, they told me that this typically means that the driver had the package on his delivery truck, but ended up not scanning the package out (which COULD mean it's still delivered and he just forgot to scan it). If he didn't scan it out, it's possible that he delivered it to the wrong house, completely missed it altogether and it went back to the post office, dropped it outside, or even delivered it but never scanned it.

In cases like that, does eBay also protect me from any negatives or other defects?

In that situation I doubt that you would be protected from an item not received case or from a negative.  You wouldn’t get a ding on your late shipping metrics if tracking showed the item was shipped within your handling time.  You would get a mark against you on your inr metrics.

Hi brian@ebay, can you clarify for this OP, and in the reverse for this other OP as well?

Hi @mormardra, I'm happy to clarify! Tracking does need to show the item was delivered to be covered by Seller Protection. If tracking doesn't have delivery confirmation and the buyers asks us to step in on an Item Not Received case, we would close it in the buyers favor. This would result in a case closed without seller resolution defect for the seller. However, if a buyer opens an Item Not Received case and the seller voluntarily refund the buyer before eBay is asked to step in, the seller would not receive a defect.

Buyers also have the option of leaving negative feedback if they choose to.

If the seller shipped the item within their handling time then it would not count as a late shipment.

Hi Brian,

I'm a little confused now. I think there may be a disconnect somewhere with eBay's system and with what eBay employees are told. Shortly after you replied to this, the case was closed and eBay stated, "We reviewed the case and have decided to issue the buyer a refund of $13.99 without any impact to you.

This case is now closed. You are not required to reimburse the buyer or eBay, and this case will not be counted in your seller performance evaluation."

Doesn't this mean that I am not affected at all by the package being lost? Is there anywhere in eBay's policies clarifying what happened here?

It sounds like eBay decided to give a courtesy refund the buyer so that neither you nor the buyer are out any money...it won’t affect your account. Ebay does do that in some cases but I don’t know what the exact circumstances have to be . I don’t think they will give out that information as they don’t want people to take advantage.
