If the "their" is an eBay seller not shipping the item quickly enough, then eBay will penalize the seller with a "Late Shipment" mark.  Too many of these, and the seller will be penalized by eBay (higher rates, less visibility, etc.)

If the "their" is a shipper such as USPS or FedEx, then nothing happens.

If the item has not arrived yet, and is passed due according to eBay's date ... then you can file an Item Not Received claim with eBay to petition for a refund.

How late is it? Was it late being shipped?

In your question, who is the "their"?

The seller? The carrier?

About shipment late?

Hi, in relation to the shipping later than promised (for example, i promised I would ship within 24 hours from the purchase), to avoid being penalized by ebay for late shipment,

my question is: what is the action that Ebay uses to know  when you shipped the item? is is when you mark the object as "shipped" or is it when you enter the package tracking number, or any other criteria?

Thank you!

The package needs to be scanned by the postal service within your handling time or it is considered late.

But if it is shipped late and is scanned as delivered within the estimated delivery time, you won't get a late ding.

Or, if there is no tracking, it is marked late only if the buyer checks off that it arrived late when they leave feedback.
