Hi sheila@ebay
I think it would be a nice feature to be able to UN-pin a thread that has been Floated to the top of the list on the thread instead of opening the thread and then using the Unfloat function and then back to the list of threads to do the next one. Being able to Un-pin it while its on the list would save a lot of time. Green arrow on pic below)

Don't make fun of me, @mr_lincoln, but how can we users unpin a thread? I don't see an "unfloat function" on my desktop platform. Can you help me with a screenshot, maybe? Thanks!

First and foremost ... I never make fun of people ... okay, there was that one time 3 months ago but HEY, they deserved it right?
On to business ...
When a member is on an open thread in the upper right hand corner is the Options pull down menu (green arrow) . On the list is a choice to Float a topic OR if a topic has been Floated to the top to Unfloat ... (Orange arrow) (ie: "Pinned" the new term but inconsistent verbiage from the pull down menu to the thread list) ...

I don't have that option on my dropdown, whether it's on a pinned thread or an unpinned thread. Is it something that's set in our community account?

@mr_lincoln is using a different drop-down list than the one you used and posted in your screenshot. Also, I believe he is referring to "floated" threads, rather than "pinned" threads, per se.
If you take a closer look at mr_lincoln's screenshot, you'll be able to see what I mean. mr_lincoln is referring to threads that he has, personally, "floated" to the top for his own display. Your drop-down list is at the top-right of the first post in the thread. mr_lincoln's drop down is above and to the right of that one (so more topper-righter, I guess).
I've never used the "float" feature, and I don't think that this would have any effect on "pinned" threads, which have been pinned to the top of the board by moderators, so they don't get lost in the shuffle. Pinned threads are great for reference threads, that have information or links that lots of users can benefit from.

@lacemaker3, @pburn Okay, there are TWO pull down menus. One appears per Post on an open thread and THAT is the one @pburn showed a screen shot of. Mine is identical to that on threads. The one I am referring to is per opened thread and is NOT in the post area but up to the right. Now, @lacemaker3 as to "Pinned" and "Floated" threads they are the same thing. Each member can "Float / Pin" any thread they want and it will appear at the top of their Board list in chronological order. This can be done for quick reference AND you can Float anybody's thread to the top of your board list. Now, if Sheila or Brian wanted to Pin a thread for all to see on a board they can do that so THEIR thread is always at the top above any other threads on that board (pinned or not) ... sheila@ebay can confirm this next week when she's back in, that is most likely part of the Admin access level to The Community.
So, below are a sequence of screenshots showing the threads that I have pinned on this board ... I will be Unfloating the 2nd one down via the method my OP is about ... note it is gone after I Unfloat it ... it moves down the list. (sorry about all the space the pics take but this might make it more clear).

Got it, @lacemaker3!
Thanks for the explanation! I should have noticed @mr_lincoln was referring to the main board title page dropdown, not the individual thread/post dropdown. Duh--on my part!

No, a floated thread is not the same as a pinned thread. They may look the same for the user who floated a thread, but not for anyone else.
I understood what you meant, once I looked at the screenshot in your first post and realized what you were talking about. I was trying to clarify, because it appeared that another responder had been confused when you referred to a floated thread as a pinned thread.
I'm not quibbling about your suggestion about unfloating threads. That could be very useful for users who use floated threads a lot.
I have had a similar thought about reporting threads. I would like to be able to report a spam or pornographic thread, or one posting a phishing link, without having to open the thread to do so.

- A pinned thread, has been pinned by a moderator or blue, so that it is always at the top of the list of threads on a board, no matter who views the list of threads.
- A floated thread, has been floated to the top of the list of threads by a user, and it only shows at the top of the list of threads for that user.

@lacemaker3 Actually, all the threads I have "Floated" say and show they are "Pinned" (See the pics) ... I did that not a Moderator or a Community team member. My last post shows how I can Unfloat (or Unpin) a thread I previously Floated ... it dropped off the Floated list down the page to its chronological place on the board's thread flow ... meaning, its still there just not towards the top.
Also as mentioned, if you or pburn had a thread on this board I could Float it to the top of my list for quick reference if I wanted to and then Unfloat it later.
The terms "Float" and Pinned" are synonymous and should be changed to one or the other but not both. If memory serves the "Float" term predates the "Pinned" term now used on the board list indicating a thread has been Floated to the top ... kind of like we used to say "@ mention" but now we say "tagged" with regard to individuals.
And yes, allowing us to Unfloat - Unpin threads right off the board list instead of the multi-step process I illustrated would be nice ...

Oh my @pburn, I have already had at least 32 "Duh's" this month and its only the 9th!!!

That's rather sloppy programming.
Only a moderator or a blue can unpin a pinned thread, so it's confusing to use the same term for a floated thread.

@lacemaker3 Ahhhh, now you see it ... I can UNPIN my own threads but the function on the pull down menu is "FLOAT" OR "UNFLOAT" but the list of threads shows it as PINNED not FLOATED.

hmmmm ... I thought you were baiting me. Now I'm not sure what to think.

@lacemaker3 No, not baiting at all ... just trying to clarify that I am talking about Member's Floating - Pinning threads not Mods or Community Team members (like Sheila, Velvet, Brian, etc). ALL the "Pinned" threads you see in my pics are ones I used the "Float this ..." setting in the upper right pull down menu (which is only available when a thread is opened).
I can Float and Unfloat threads of my choosing and they get moved to the top of my list on whatever board they were posted on BUT they get that "Pinned" designation as you can see on my pics.

OK I'll take your word for it.
