In visiting the community more often, I believe it would be beneficial to allow authors the ability to edit & update their threads' first OP (at least until the thread is closed).
This way, as new information is learned or updated, authors could simply update the OP to convey the latest information (I have noticed sometimes key information gets lost and buried amidst responses).
Alternatively, I have seen some platforms allow a "Wiki" type entry available immediately following the OP that anyone can contribute to. Not sure if this is an option available on Lithium or not.

We do NOT want edits to the OP which might change the entire story Additions and updates can be added in subsequent posts.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I tend to agree with @chrysylys on this one. For the safety of the Community it's best to keep the edit time limit in place.
