Following eBay Community Rules When Referring to External Tools or Websites

Hello everyone,

I wanted to start a quick discussion about how to properly reference or mention external websites or tools when posting here in the eBay Community — while staying fully within eBay’s rules and guidelines.

Sometimes, we come across useful online tools (for example, time converters or calculators) that can help with listings, schedules, or general selling tasks. I’m curious to know what’s considered acceptable when mentioning such resources.

Here are a few questions for discussion:

  1. Is it okay to refer to an external site for educational or informational purposes as long as it’s not self-promotion?

  2. What’s the best way to share helpful tools without breaking eBay’s community policies?

  3. Should we simply describe the tool’s function instead of linking directly to it?

This post is only for learning and discussion — no promotions or personal data sharing involved.

If you’d like, I can also share my own website with you for feedback later on.

This is pretty general, but it's a decent way to look at it:

Using a posting ID and doing nothing about talking about a specific tool is considered spam / advertising.

Established posters and sellers discussing various seller tools in the natural course of discussion are generally not spamming.

So I would just refer to the parts of the guidelines that should be relevant depending on the poster and their intent.  As long as you are following these guidelines, referring to third-party tools or websites should be ok. I agree with @wastingtime101 on an easy way to determine whether it fits or not.

Content and actions not permitted

Inappropriate content or content in violation of these community guidelines, or the eBay User Agreement, should not be posted. You agree to refrain from posting content or taking actions that are:

  • advertising listings, products, or services in order to solicit sales or otherwise use the Community as a marketing platform
  • promoting off-eBay sites, groups, or forums, or suggestions that encourage users to leave eBay

Third-party representatives looking to post on Community must secure approval prior to posting.

No, in fact that is precisely what most of us here would want to make sure is not happening.
