Cannot return to the previous location in posting history on the Profile page

When scrolling through my past Posts and Replies history on my own Profile page (https://community.ebay.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/2465849 in my case), returning to it after following one of its links never saves my last location in my posting history on the page.

If I return to it from elsewhere by clicking my Back button, it always comes up on Page 1 of my Posts tab. If I scroll to another page or (in particular) jump to the Replies tab and scroll through there, I can jump to any link shown there, but when I hit my Back button to return to the history, I'm dumped back on Page 1 of my Posts tab. If I was previously on, say, Page 7 of my Replies history when selecting a link, it's a pain to have to click my way over and down that path again to pick up where I left off.

In comparison, a similar history page that does do this correctly is the [userID's] Recent Posts Page (https://community.ebay.com/t5/forums/recentpostspage/post-type/message/user-id/2465849 in my case). I can go to Page 7 there, pick a link from there, and when I return later via Back button, it brings me back to Page 7, not Page 1. (Thanks to @wastingtime101 for pointing out this page.)

I'm sure it should not be a big deal to clear up this omission, so that when I come back to my Profile History page from whichever link I followed most recently, it will place me at the point in my history list where I jumped off, on either the Posts tab or Replies tab as appropriate.

Cannot return to the previous location in posting history on the Profile page

It used to be that the pagination for post history through the profile page would link to the "recentpostspage" link above. That changed last year with the redesign. The new setup is much more clunky to deal with and makes it difficult to browse through your posting history looking for something.

Thanks for posting wastingtime101's recent posts link -- I have been struggling to use a different page to find my own posts since the board upgrade, and that link with my userid substituted will be a great time saver for me.

When I run into issues where a back page link does not return to the same spot, I get around the issue by opening the link in a new browser tab; that way closing the new tab leaves me exactly where I left off in the old tab. But this workaround does not necessarily work in all situations, and the original issue should still be addressed by Khoros.

On the current profile page, you can't even open the pagination in a separate tab. Pagination has that option disabled. The link I shared with AC is something I've found to be invaluable.

It's too bad Khoros took it out of the profile function, but at least it's not disabled. I rely on it heavily so I can follow up on posts where I've tagged eBay for help, when I want to follow the progress of a discussion without subscribing to notifications, when I'm putting together a string of posts surrounding the same issue, and even to copy/paste my own response on occasion. I use macros for some common questions, but not for everything.

I kinda think it's more likely that they simply forgot to bring that functionality forward when they tried to upgrade to a big new release. It was not the first time that they have come out with a big new upgrade that failed to carry forward a lot of the eBay-specific enhancements that had been added to the previous release.

Their practice (through at least two major upgrades that I can recall) has been to plug in some generic New Version, then scurry around trying to restore all the user-friendly (and perhaps site-specific) details that had been added in the previous series. (e.g. Posting order, quoting style, float-to-top when replied, show eBay logo if staff answered, etc.)

(Incidentally, that last example above reminds me that they had agreed years ago to make the eBay logo on the index page a hotlink that would jump you straight to the first eBay reply in the thread, but it never happened.)

Can you help me better understand the functionality that was disabled?

I've used the posts page forever, since I don't have to actually go out to a thread to read a complete post, so I get that part of the conversation. What I'm unclear about is the phrase I've highlighted from your post.

So . . . I'm on a_c_green's profile page. I can choose to look at posts or replies. I go to his/her list of replies and move through to page seven. There's a thread with one of his/her replies that is entitled "Vionic Verification Request." I should say right here that I always choose the option to "Open link in new tab," as eburtonlab mentioned. (I do that all over the web in virtually all circumstances--just habit.) If I choose that option when using a two-finger tap (touchpad user, here), it works as expected. And, of course, his profile page is still on page 7 in the original tab, right where I left it.

Is that what your phrase above is referring to? If not, could you guide me through it?

What I do love is trying to weed through a_c_green's posts (585 pages on the list of posts and 2948 on his/her profile page) one at a time, trying to find that one brilliant comment s/he posted last summer. Have they never heard of a "go to page #___" option? If anyone has a workaround for that, I'd love to hear it!

If you right click on the last page of that list of posts, and open that page in a new tab, you can highlight the 585 at the end of the page address in the browser address bar, and type in a different number, such as 300, to go directly to that page:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/forums/recentpostspage/post-type/message/user-id/2465849/page/300

Although if you can remember a key phrase such as keywords from that post, it might be easier to search for that phrase in a_c_green's posts directly.

https://community.ebay.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?filter=authorId&q=keywords&author_id=246...

It appears the links on that page go to the original post in the thread rather than the actual comment of interest, so another round of searching may be required to find the relevant post.

I'm referring to opening pagination in a new tab, not opening posts in new tabs. So go to your own profile page, go to the replies tab, then try to open page 4 in a new tab. Does it work or does it just jump your profile to page 4 of replies?

Before last year's redesign it would open this page in a new tab:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/forums/recentpostspage/post-type/message/user-id/14372895/page/4

Now it just changes the data in the page frame but keeps you on the profile page (with a small number of posts showing per page). I suspect it's intentionally designed that way. Who knows if Khoros' other clients rely on post history the way we do on this forum?

A similar frustrating design change:

PMs and Notifications will not open in a new tab. They will only open in the current tab. Would be great if Sheila could add that to the list of issues.

Brilliant! Thanks!

I do use that approach sometimes, but I don't find it all that successful the majority of the time. The search located the keyword in a 386-post thread the other day. LOL!

Thanks again!

Yes, there's one additional setting you need to select in order to jump directly to the relevant post:

  1. On the Search Results page (such as the link above), click on the "Advanced" link near the upper right corner.
  2. Click on the pulldown menu under the "View results by" heading.
  3. Change the selection from "Topics" to "Specific posts," and the page will automatically refresh itself to show links to the actual matching posts rather than just the thread topics.

Got it. Just never heard it referred to as "opening  pagination."

Are you referring to opening notifications and/or private messages via the icons that appear on virtually any Community page? Or something/somewhere else?

Hey! Thanks for the tip! I'll try that additional filter next time I use that search function.

P.S. I don't, BTW, stalk your posts--I just used yours as an example.

Oh, crud. That must mean that the black van with all the antennas on it parked down the street from me must belong to someone else... 🤔
