I had an opportunity to get a North Face jacket for $0 --
I declined ---I did not think I could resell; the jacket being very very picky was a
B-
but I don't think buyers want to buy a used clothing item that they then have to pay tax on.

The fact that you failed to sell your Columbia jacket, when multiple others did sell, doesn't prove the above to be true. Shop total price.
yes total price
I only charge exactly what it costs to ship....that part is out of my control
I don't remember what I listed the Columbia jacket for....but it was pretty low.
I do my research before I list and see what others sold for.
yes, others sold and mine did not....maybe if I would have lowered the price
shipped for FREE and held onto it for months and months...??

I can't believe anyone is taking this entire thread seriously....
I mean, just look at how much clothing is sold on ebay......that certainly disproves the original premise....

You complain nj taxes everything and that once they find out the charity doesn't have taxes they'll change it. Well Im sure they already know about charities having exemptions. And looking at nj tax laws my state ms taxes many things yours does not such as clothing and food.

I made extra cash on the side for years selling clothing on here. And no it's not easy. But it definitely made me money. Some things were better than others of course. I completely got out of selling on here a sept 2019 because I was moving to the middle of no where in December. There is no where local to shop for inventory shipping from here would be a pain and I lack the storage space here.

All local thrift stores (except the Salvation Army) charge sales tax on purchases here.

Same for me with NYDJ jeans, except they are even more expensive and I buy them (sometimes new) for $3 to $5 at the thrift store when I find them in my size (which I regularly do).

Columbia is not in the same class as The North Face. We own a bunch all bought new at their outlet stores (mostly Vero Beach), sometimes for $5 (shorts) to $26 (Omni-Heat 3-in-1 winter jacket). They have 60% off all clearance sales and even sample items that are not available elsewhere. So I would not buy Columbia used but I have bought a The North Face jacket on Ebay.

no, I am not trying to sell just "any old thing"
yes I know its a learning curve --I have been on here for awhile I certainly get the work and knowledge part.
What I cannot control is if my listing winds up on page 149.
or if shipping and tax makes it much harder to sell anything.
@bigyellowdog2012 I understand, and you had a good item to sell. But that's quite a jump from 'this isn't selling' to 'used clothing will probably fail here.'

Oh! You're the one with that adorable dog!
Right now is a bad time to sell clothing and especially not on auction - I generally have very regular sales and they've really been stuttering - I've even shut down here because of USPS hold-ups, and I usually shut eBay store down this time of year. People are generally going for Christmas present/Holiday gift type stuff. After Christmas they purchase they stuff that they want.
List your North Face jacket after Christmas at fixed price. I once sold my old TNF hiking pants that had a bit of wear on one back hem and they were snapped up because the rest of the pants were in great shape, and they're $80 new, but mine were only $32 or so including tax and shipping, and the buyer didn't have to go out himself to find them.
ETA: Sorry about the partial responses - I have a cat here trying to share my keyboard.

no problem
thanks for the comment about my dog
She is very special
She came from the Popcorn Park animal shelter here in South Jersey.
8 years old they named her Maple because she is sooo sweet.
We call her Princess 🙂
As for that North Face?
It disappeared out of the back of the thrift shop
one of the other volunteers took it before it even went out on the floor

but I must say the manager of the thrift shop is ruining it for everyone
She writes in permanent black marker on the clothing label what is being charged.
So you really can't resell it when the marker on the label says $15.
She is also selling a BUNCH of disgusting fake fake fake Coach handbags.
for $$$.
I tell everyone they are fake but she would kick me out if she knew.
the world is broken 😞

She IS a little princess!
Around here a lot of the good stuff gets put online by thrifts and we shoppers never see it - at least that's honest.

Sure you can. I've sold stuff with the retail price tag still on it for more than twice the retail price.

@bigyellowdog2012 ..Oh that manager is just wrong to do that..That is so tacky to write on items with a felt marker. I put a stop to that in our thrift shop, some of the gals were writing on Bisque items!! Ever tried to get black marker off of bisque?
As for the fake designer bags, I know you don't have the authority to destroy them but ( oh and I can just hear the posters on the fashion board screaming!) Legally, big doggie I don't think your shop can sell these fakes.
Can you possibly call for a store meeting to discuss this? We have a expert that examines all purses and she destroys the fake ones.
