I had an opportunity to get a North Face jacket for $0 --
I declined ---I did not think I could resell; the jacket being very very picky was a
B-
but I don't think buyers want to buy a used clothing item that they then have to pay tax on.

You'd be surprised what buyers will buy if the price is right! Never ever turn down free to flip..its a RULE of the picker nation!

Why not? I have to pay tax on all the items I buy at the local thrift and second-chance stores locally. Why wouldn't I be prepared to pay tax for something I buy online?

You need to understand that state sales is charged on the transaction, not on the item.
And, personally, I buy most of my wardrobe at thrift stores, get great deals and gladly pay state sales tax on my purchases. Enables me to have a nice wardrobe for minimal expenditure and when I get tired of something, guess where it goes back to?

I agree with silverstate, and will add another rule: "You are not your buyer." YOU may object to paying sales tax on used clothing, but that doesn't mean your buyers also object. I just did a search of solds for "North Face jacket Womens" in "Used".....I assume a fair percentage of those thousands of sales included sales tax as part of the purchase price.

It's a premium brand and in demand even in used condition. It's the WalMart and Kohls brands that are a hard sell. As long as you describe the wear and have close up photographs of the 'defects' the buyer shouldn't be surprised. Some people are even adept at taking a B clothing item and turning it into an A, could be it needs a cleaning or a small repair.

Truth be told I have never understood used clothing - Unless it is REALLY something VERY VERY special.
I won't even wear my brother's clothes and he's family.

Oh goodness...you're missing out!
All you have to do is wash what you buy. It's no different than new clothes with all those foreign chemicals all over them, being handled on the racks by thousands of shoppers.
I love Levis. Why would I pay $50+ for a pair when I can buy the exact thing in good to nearly new condition for $6 at the thrift store? I've purchased NWT blouses for $3-$5. The store tags were $25+.

It's survived this long, I doubt it's going to fail.

A friend of mine was getting married a few years ago. They had been together for a dog's age and were just going to go to the Justice without any fuss just to get that "legal piece of paper". She was not planning on buying a dress.
She was in the Thrift store ... saw a designer gown that looked brand new. For giggles, she tried it on. It fit like it was made for her ... $30 for a $2000+ dress ... you betcha she bought it LOL.
They still got married at the Justice, but she wore the gown and he wore a nice suit ... they paid for professional pics done in the local park. She was radiant and beautiful 🙂

I thought used clothing was the absolute number one market on eBay.

I've been selling used clothing for a decade now. People will buy it, especially a brand like north face.

Nothing in your post explains why the used clothing category will fail.
It simply explains why 1 seller out of millions is choosing not to use that category.

With the advent of smartphones, now a seller can research an item in Completed listings virtually on the spot to see how the brand sells in used condition. Most high end brands keep their value well. You'd be surprised.
