why does ebay allow so much time to return an item?

i issued a return label 6/20 the buyer has until 7/12 to ship it.

why does ebay allow  22 days to return the item?

you know some buyers are using the item or possibly tampering with it during that time

in an age where everything is immediate & where ebay pushes you the seller to respond

to a return quickly the buyer has plenty of time to return it.

before you compare this to amazon, this is not amazon.

Simply put, eBay caters to buyers more than sellers. This should be of no surprise if you know how other areas of their policies work.

Don’t be surprised if come Christmastime eBay lengthens their return policy time upwards to two months. Why? Refer to the first sentence of my reply. That’s just how it is.

Actually that is about 14 Business days.  Just be patient.  It should not be a problem waiting or are you in a rush to refund.

I look at it this way.  The longer it takes them to put it in the mail, the less likely they are to return it at all.  I've had that happen many times.

Not sure what this means "before you compare this to amazon, this is not amazon."  This is a completely different type of site than Amazon.  So you are right, they shouldn't be compared.

Asking us why eBay does something and then telling us we are not allowed to give the correct answer to the question is intellectually dishonest.

Just because eBay is not Amazon does not mean eBay buyers do not want eBay to emulate the most  convenient and successful ecommerce website in history

The answer to your question:

 Because it makes buyers happy.

Shorter return window: Buyer not as happy.

Longer return window: Buyer is more happy.

A related question to yours:

When I generate a label for shipping as a seller, it will time-out/expire in like 7-10 days if not used.  How can a return label be good for up to 21 days when the label I create as a seller to ship an order, can't last for more than 7-10 days?

Because ebay treats sellers like trash.

It is 14 Business days, in this seller's case that equal 21 total calendar days.

Buyers need to have time to accomplish things too.  They are not like sellers that potentially are here on the site several hours a day.  There seems to be much to do about nothing here.  Most buyers return items right away as they want their money back.

A much smaller percentage will not get it done right away because they are procrastinating getting it done.  And then a much smaller percentage just never send it back.

Agreed that 22 days is a lot of time - too much, in my opinion.  I'd think that two weeks is reasonable.

Think about it this way, though - a buyer that needs to return has been inconvenienced.  I really don't like having to prioritize a trip to the FedEx store for a return just so that a seller can get his item back more quickly.

That is TWO weeks as I've previously explained.  It is 14 Business Days which has been the rule for an extremely long time.  With the exception of a few Holiday Seasons when Ebay increased the time and during the Pandemic they increase the time.
