i looked over different topics people have posted which are similar to this, but to begin with, YES, FEES ARE HIGH, but there are more people on ebay than almost any other site so your item will have a much better chance of selling. now lots of things have changed, older folks have passed and reproductions, ect, and some stuff dont bring near what they used to but other stuff brings more. i have been on here many years, a total since 1999 but took one year off, i am a top rated seller with a basic store, 0 negative feedbacks.
i have a friend who also sells on here, sometimes i want to buy items from him cause he has so much good stuff, but when i explained my fees he says no way, mine is only 12%-15%, i show him my page and he nor i understand it, but yes, it is more than what you think. ,,,,, i used to sell anywhere from $40,000.00 to $80,000.00 on here but times and health has changed. i never paid much attention to fees till the last few years, so i am going to put here exactly what my seller hub says on sales from MAY 3rd to JUNE 2nd, ,,,,, SOLD 10 ITEMS ,,,,,, TOTAL SALES $459.74 ,,,,, TAXES AND FEES $22.99 ,,,,, SELLING COSTS $155.10 (34.1%) ,,,, NET SALES $277.03 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, now if i read this right my cost are $155.10, and it says 34.1%, thats way above 12.9%-15% which my friend pays. if i read this right out of almost 460.00 sold i only made $277.03 ,,,,,,,,,,, if i paid $200 for the items i sold then i made $77.03. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, now this it what it shows every month the last 5-8 years, my fees are around 28% to 35% ,,,,,, so if i pay 50$ for a item and it sells for $100, i actually make around $20 give or take. ,,,,,,, does this ever show on anyone else's selling hub?? are you showing around 30% or is it me and im letting them get away with it????? i wish someone could really explain why this is and if it is correct. ,,,,,,, i am not in good health and do this for extra money to pay bills, it used to be fun many years ago but ebay has changed and so has everything else. ,,,,, i have tried other sites that dont charge or hardly nothing, but none compare to the traffic and sales if you have the right stuff or even if you dont. ,,,,, please reply, have a wonderful day!!!!!

Sounds like you are figuring in state taxes and shipping fees..your buyer pays those.

See the post pinned to the top of every selling page for info on how fvf's work.

What are you figuring into your "selling costs"?
Your final value fee on eBay will not be as much as your selling costs. Your final value fee on eBay will be calculated on the total of the selling price of the item, the shipping cost and the state sales tax if applicable.
Can you come back and show us an item you sold where you paid 30% in FINAL VALUE FEES?
PS: Did you ask your friend to show you, on paper, how his FVF is calculated? (I'm not talking about his "selling costs" because those are two different things.

thats what im trying to get someone to tell or show me, not point me, if i saw it i would have looked at it, and it still dont come out even in my payouts, payouts are lower than they should be!!

what are your ebay fees ??
My fees are 30 cents plus 12.9% of the buyer's total payment.

That's exactly the same way I figured it.
Customer pays shipping fees and taxes. You pay 12.9% on those charges too, even though you don't see the tax part. Then you use the shipping charge to send the customer their purchase.
There's also a 30 cent per transaction fee. Can't forget that.
And what you paid for the items has no affect on what the fees are. That's an issue many sellers make.
Looks like you just started selling again after a break, no idea why I'd mention that other than I found it interesting.

do you put that robin williams saying on everything you reply to??? i seen it many times in other posts. ,,,,,, it still comes to way more than 12-15% !!!

no i started back in 2009 after a years break,,,,, so looks like you and others are still saying my fees and your fees are around 15%????? i seen lots of other posts similar to this on fees were others would disagree, and my payouts are the real proof. ,,,, no what i paid for a item makes no difference, that is just a example of what my payout is.

Are you offering free shipping or are your buyers paying you for the shipping? Please also take into account that the collected sales taxes shouldn't be counted in the formula as the sales taxes are collected by ebay on your behalf & then remitted directly to the individual states.
Also, each ebay category could potentially have a different ebay commission rate. However, it's nowwhere near 30+ percent
The ebay managed payment rate will be about 3% of the grand total (sell price for the item + shipping charges to the customer + any sales tax)
Your cost of goods is probably the biggest factor in your total profitability.
I hope that helps a bit.
Good luck!

Every transaction varies - it may or may not have applicable taxes or international fees, etc.
Different categories have different fees as well.
1. What category?
2. Category fee Percenrage x sold price + applicable tax + shipping + any additiinal fees (i.e. 12.9% x sold price + sales tax, if applicable + shipping, if applicable, etc)
3. Apply any promotional fees you selected
The above are your 'fees" to sell the item.
"Cost of Goods Sold" are not just fees. Every seller has varying costs associated with the sale of their item(s), that affect you "net" earnings.

you are confusing ebay fees with selling fees
"ebay fees" are 12-15% as you have indicated....
"selling fees" consist of mailing labels and additional costs related to selling in addition to the selling percentages....if you are crazy enough to spend 75.00 to ship an item that should cost you 10.00 to ship, that additional 65.00 in expenses is NOT A FEE..it is an arbitrary number that affects your totals that YOU determined, thus making the percentage totally out of whack....
If you are getting your number from this page:
https://www.ebay.com/sh/performance/sales
scroll down to see the 'breakdown'of selling costs....the difference between fees and costs

Hard to explain without knowing what all fees/expenses you are including in that percentage. Ebay has a place that gives a percentage, but it includes things like your shipping cost. That doesn't mean ebay charges more than the 12.9% (or whatever your category is). That just shows a different math equation that includes all expenses, but some may be paid by your buyer.
Pull up an item in your financial summary and it breaks down the ebay fees and shows what percentage that item was charged. Your bottom dollar depends on many things other than the ebay fees---such as what you paid for the item, shipping, etc.

You are adding the ebay fees AND your shipping costs. There's the error.
The $459.74 is your gross, the $277.03 is your total deposit to your bank account. You are charged 12.9% on tax (which you never see) and shipping charge. So of course, the actual amount paid is going to be higher than 12.9%. I figure it at 15%, because I like round numbers.
The 12.9% (plus 30 cents per transaction) ebay fee and your shipping costs add up to $155.10.
Math.
